Phinisi is a traditional wooden boat originating from Makassar, South Sulawesi. Recognised as a historical heritage by UNESCO, it was first constructed in the 14th century by Prince Sawerigading of the Luwu Kingdom. The boat was crafted from the durable wood of the Devata tree. Historical records indicate that the local residents of Ara, Tana Beru, and Lemo Lemo assisted Prince Sawerigading in enlarging his vessel. This wooden boat was named Phinisi, meaning “A boat that is strong against the waves.”
