Cape Henry Memorial

Cape Henry Memorial
Enjoy scenic views of ocean and dunes. This intriguing memorial pays tribute to the arrival of the English and a defining Anglo-French battle.

Visit the Cape Henry Memorial to learn about two important stories in American history. English colonists who journeyed across the ocean marked their arrival here with a wooden cross. Also called the First Landing Cross, the monument features a granite replica of the wooden cross. View the nearby sculpture of a French commander to learn about the second commemorated event, when French Allies defeated a British fleet off this cape in the 18th century.

Admire picturesque views of the Atlantic Ocean as you stroll along a wooden boardwalk over the sands. Reach the sculpture of Admiral Comte deGrasse, the commander of a French fleet, whose victory over the British was a decisive battle enabling Washington’s Yorktown triumph. Read the plaque on the base of the statue for information about the 1781 Battle of the Capes, which took place off this coast.

Almost two centuries prior, the English colonists arrived here in 1607, planting their wooden cross. This inspiring religious symbol was upgraded to granite in 1935 by the Daughters of the American Colonists. Learn about the 4.5-month voyage of the Virginia Company and their struggles in the Jamestown settlement with sickness, failed industry and ultimately a massacre in a fierce battle with Native Americans.

Take a pleasant hike between the sand dunes with your family. Gaze up at the 18th-century brick Cape Henry Lighthouse and its newer black-and-white sibling. The former is open to the public, with its upper platform providing spectacular vistas of the coast.

Look for the pair of lighthouses overlooking the Atlantic Ocean to find Cape Henry Memorial in the northern outskirts of Virginia Beach. Travel north from the city center for 6 miles (10 kilometers) to arrive at the memorial in about 20 minutes by car.

Explore the area for other sights including St. Theresa Chapel, the First Landing Chapel and First Landing State Park.
