Mitsukoshi

If something is made in Japan, you’ll probably find it at this Tokyo department store. Experience this business with a long reputation of putting the customer first.

Mitsukoshi department stores are located throughout the country and in certain areas outside Japan, such as Paris and Florida. This one in Tokyo’s fashionable Nihombashi area is the flagship operation. The business has an impressive history in Japan since its beginning in 1673 as a supplier for kimono fabrics.

Choose interesting merchandise from varied departments throughout the multi-floored store. Tax-free shopping is available to international visitors. Select from fashion, cosmetics, jewelry, home accessories, art and other items that provide a true representation of what Japan has to offer.

Notice the store’s iconic bronze lions at the main entrance. They are a city landmark and often serve as a place where people arrange to meet downtown.

Inside the store, staff members demonstrate the operating policy of being attentive and courteous bows to customers are commonplace. A large statue of an angel represents the sincerity of the business and dominates the central hall of the store.

The original Nihombashi Mitsukoshi building became Japan’s first department store in the early 1900s and had the nation’s first escalator. In 1923, it was demolished by fire as the result of an earthquake but was soon rebuilt. It returned to business in 1925 and became known for the children’s lunches it served in its restaurant. Enjoy casual and formal dining here during a break from shopping. A neighboring store in Ginza opened in 1930 and expanded food offerings. Visit the Ginza Mitsukoshi food halls and supermarket floor for the highly artistic food presentations and select a meal that you can enjoy on the grassy ninth-floor patio.

Walk to the Nihombashi and Ginza Mitsukoshi stores from their respective metro stops within 5 minutes. Both centers are open every day. Ask about delivery service to certain Tokyo hotels. If you want to purchase a kimono, shop at the Nihombashi Mitsukoshi store, which has been a key supplier for centuries.
