Luxembourg’s eminent National Museum of History and Art has amassed a superb collection of artworks and artifacts from the country’s fascinating history. Established in the mid-19th century, the museum specializes in archaeological relics, fine arts, period craft items and antique coins. Wander through the intriguingly curated exhibits and form a mental picture of Luxembourg through the ages.

Enter the museum’s modern cube-like building to investigate its light-filled exhibition halls. View an excellent collection of Luxembourgish artworks, including modern masterpieces, post-impressionist watercolors and sculptures within these airy galleries. Take the stairs or the elevator to the lower floors to find cavernous chambers descending underground. Mimicking an archeological excavation, these galleries are carved into the stone beneath the building’s foundations and display a magnificent collection of antique relics.

Check out archeological artifacts from prehistory to the Middle Ages, including tools, ceramics, mosaics and sculptures. See reconstructed dwellings and skeletal remains of local wildlife. Wander through to the exhibit of coins and medals to find an impressive collection of items, including Roman artifacts and currency from antiquity to today.

Discover the museum’s program of events, which include lectures, workshops and seminars related to the permanent collections and temporary exhibitions. Join one of the guided tours in English, which are usually held weekly. Stop at the museum’s shop to pick up souvenirs, including limited-edition prints, ceramics, jewelry and books. The museum has a café serving refreshments and snacks.

The museum is located in Luxembourg City’s historic center. Admission to the permanent collection is free however, some temporary exhibitions have an admission fee for adults over the age of 26. The museum is closed on Mondays. Set aside at least 2 hours to fully explore the museum’s collection and temporary exhibitions. Access the museum by local bus or train or reach it with an easy stroll through the city’s compact and picturesque center.
