Overview

The Baptism Site of Jesus Christ, also known as Bethany Beyond the Jordan or Al-Maghtas, is an archaeological World Heritage Site in Jordan. It is located on the east bank of the Jordan River, north of the Dead Sea, and is believed to be where John the Baptist baptized Jesus. The site has been venerated as a pilgrimage destination since at least the Byzantine period, and many ruins of churches and monasteries from that time remain.
