I love the windswept trees and bushes lining the eastern coast. Dominica is right in the heart of Hurricane Alley, and the vegetation here is built to withstand it. The last direct hit was 1995, but it was Hurricane David in 1979 that did the most damage - 145mph winds killed 56 people and left 75% of the island homeless.

While you're on the island, take the time to visit the Kalinago Village for an introduction to the pre-Columbian way of life. This model village will introduce you to traditional ways of life, including canoe building, cassava processing, basket weaving, calabash carving, and herb collection and preparation. You can also buy lovely handicrafts such as woven Larouma baskets and carved calabash gourds. The highlight for us, though, was a cultural dance performance by members of the Karifuna Cultural Group, whose objective is to revive and maintain the remaining aspects of the Kalinago culture. Great views. Sleeping with the sound of the ocean was heaven. Beautiful home with great living spaces and bedrooms. The kitchen is on the lower level below with stairs that are little steep but leads to a gorgeous covered deck. We never found the tidal pool in the pictures.

Our cottage was right on the beach and we went to bed each night with the sound of quiet waves lulling us to sleep. We went for a diving trip and Cabrits Dive Shop was a short walk away making it very convenient. The beach is beautiful! Staff was kind and kept the place clean and neat.

Although his bakery stand is new, Daniel Frederick still employs traditional techniques in crafting his delicious cassava bread. Fresh ground manioc is mixed with coconut, sugar and water to form a dense, flat bread similar to a thick pancake. The coconut and sugar add a touch of sweetness that makes this bread addictive. The bakery is over in the Kalinago Territory on the east coast, so it's a bit of a trip if you're staying in Roseau. But if you're visiting the Kalinago Village it's worth a stop, and you can also hit it up on your way to/from the airport. I'm not sure that I pinned it just right, but any of the locals could quickly point it out.
