The District of Bari Murat spreads between the railway and the coastal roads with its orthogonal grid, and together with the late Old Town constitutes today’s centre of the city.

The district is named “Murattiano” since Joachim Murat (Marshal of Napoleon Bonaparte), inaugurated and supported, during his government at the head of the Kingdom of Naples, the construction of the new area near the ancient medieval city of Bari.

Indeed, Murat promulgated the decree for the construction of the “new town” (or “gioacchino”, then “murattiano”) in a flat area in the south of the old centre, while the walls surrounding the old city were gradually dismantled and replaced by current Corso Vittorio Emanuele.

The Murat is the most vibrant neighbourhood of the city. In the area there are some of the busiest and most vital places in the city as Corso Vittorio Emanuele II and Piazza Umberto I overlooked by the majestic building of the University.
