Learn more about Birdsville

Join locals at the iconic Birdsville Hotel for a cold drink after watching the famous Birdsville Races held each September. Climb Big Red sand dune in the Simpson Desert for spectacular sunset views, or visit the working Inland Hospital museum to learn about outback medicine.

Big Red is the tallest of the 1140 dunes that stretch their way from the Simpson Desert. It's also on the edge of the desert, so you can visit Big Red without having to equip your car for the desert. (Regulations state that if you are going into the desert you must have flags on your vehicle.)
The best time to be here is either sunrise or sunset so you can see the colours change on the dune. I choose sunset, and took a bottle of wine with me.
