This Rhododendron was growing straight out of the rock. When I came across it along the trail up to Brasstown visitor center. Rhododendron is a beautiful plant that grows along the smokies. It's full green leaves are very distinctive and in the south are on the plant almost year around. In late spring the plant blooms and shows large and beautiful flowers.
When I got up in the morning I wanted to go for a hike. I didn't have a set place to go to, and I didn't really have any desire to find photographs. Because, the cloud cover was so low, I decided to park at the base of Georgia's tallest mountain. Brasstown Bald, and hike to it's nearly 5,000 ft. peak. There sits a visitor center. By the time I got there around 12 PM, it was a balmy 34 degrees and very windy. As you can tell, the cloud cover was also there. It was incredible walking up the mountain as clouds passed by. Up at the top clouds would cross the mountain and occasionally you could see to other peaks around and down to the valleys below. about 30 minutes later as I was hiking down the mountain the skies cleared up and it became a beautiful day. If you want to hike up the mountain there are trails at the base where the sign is and a small parking lot. Up at the upper parking lot it's a 6/10 mile hike to the top that feels more like steps.
