Dating from the very beginning of the Reconquista, this medieval fortress has witnessed almost 1,000 years of fascinating Catalonian history.
Now mostly used for weddings and galas, the Castle Vilafortuny was once on the front row of history. Built in the 12th century, about when the union of Catalonia and the Kingdom of Aragon marked the beginning of the expulsion of the Moors from Spain, the stone walls have stood through generations of upheaval. Walk to its location, not far from Cambrils, to see a small piece of the history of Spain.
Look up at the crenellations that line the roof. Archers likely stood here at one time, ready to defend the castle and its inhabitants from aggressors. Search for the small windows at the top through which they watched for enemies. Imagine the frantic preparations that took place when invaders were spotted on the horizon or picture the lavish celebrations that demonstrated the riches of medieval Catalonia.
Come at night to see the castle lit up. If you’re lucky, see the well-dressed and well-heeled residents of Cambrils arrive for events at the castle. Admire how the rich warm colors of the castle contrast with the dark green of the nearby foliage in the evening under the stars in the night sky above. Stop here on the way back from the beach to remember that for all its natural beauty and lovely sandy shores, Cambrils has a long history that sometimes included conflict.
Located near Vilafortuny Beach, the Castle Vilafortuny is an easy 10-minute walk from the beach. Drive here in about 10 minutes from the main Cambrils train station, the town center or the nearby resort town of Salou. The nearest airport is in Reus, about 20 minutes away by car. Parking is available on nearby streets. Take care when visiting because the street can be busy. The castle is available to be rented for private events. If invited inside, enjoy seeing the restored medieval rooms, courtyard and gardens.
