  • The second oldest building remaining on The Ohio State University campus, Orton Hall was opened in 1893. It is named after Dr Edward Orton, Sr. who served as Ohio State's first president, OSU Professor of Geology from 1873 to 1899, and Ohio's State Geologist from 1882 until his death in 1899. Orton Hall is built of 40 different Ohio building stones. In the outside walls, these stones are laid in stratigraphic order according to their relative positions in Ohio's bedrock. The only non-indigenous to Ohio stone used is Indiana Limestone to build the front steps. It was chosen because of its high concentration of embedded fossils. The bell tower was dedicated in 1915 and contains 25,000 pounds of bells that can be heard regularly tolling across campus. Encircling the top of the tower are 24 columns with gargoyle-like figures which are restorations of fossil animals.

The hotel was okay for a short stay but it definitively needs a remodel The room was clean, the furniture and fixtures are outdated. Carpet definitely needs replaced. with some updates this place could be much better. The bed was comfortable. Parking was very crowded, making it difficult to find a spot at times.

The property and hotel are fantastic. The staff is great. All of the amenities are great. The one problem I encountered was a stale/musty/sewer smell in my room. I bought an air freshener and it did get better with time, but if it did not, I was prepared to switch rooms. Otherwise, fantastic hotel and stay!

The photos online made the room look way nicer than what I walked into. The staff were friendly, and the rooms weren’t dirty, just not the cleanest. No bugs or anything like that, so that was a relief, but the place definitely needs some attention. The lobby and floor tiles were cracked, and the elevator made noises that had me questioning my life choices every time I stepped in. The pool area was freezing, like someone forgot heaters even exist, and there were no towels anywhere. The room setup was confusing. I honestly want to know who designed it because the layout made no sense at all. The room has potential, it just needs upgrades and a smarter design. Corporate, call me. I have ideas.
