  • The second oldest building remaining on The Ohio State University campus, Orton Hall was opened in 1893. It is named after Dr Edward Orton, Sr. who served as Ohio State's first president, OSU Professor of Geology from 1873 to 1899, and Ohio's State Geologist from 1882 until his death in 1899. Orton Hall is built of 40 different Ohio building stones. In the outside walls, these stones are laid in stratigraphic order according to their relative positions in Ohio's bedrock. The only non-indigenous to Ohio stone used is Indiana Limestone to build the front steps. It was chosen because of its high concentration of embedded fossils. The bell tower was dedicated in 1915 and contains 25,000 pounds of bells that can be heard regularly tolling across campus. Encircling the top of the tower are 24 columns with gargoyle-like figures which are restorations of fossil animals.

Wonderful stay

This place is amazing! A cute little carriage house with a lovely pond & backyard. The house itself was wonderful. It was quiet, clean and well-stocked. It’s also close to a lot of really cool things so there is plenty to check out if you feel so inclined. Will definitely stay here again the next time we’re in Columbus. The owners were also communicative and so friendly!

Our stay at the Little House was wonderful. It was the perfect amount of space for my husband and me. The hosts were welcoming. They added touches like snack basket, K-cups set up, and amenities in the bathroom. The backyard they share is so peaceful. We will definitely book with Sue again.

Cute little getaway

My partner and I stayed here with a friend for 3 nights. It was easy to find and get check in. The area felt safe even though we had to arrive after midnight. Rosie and Sue were very flexible with our timing for check in and check-out and helpful with any questions. However, one thing I didn’t realize is that there were not 2 actual bedrooms it’s more like an upstairs open den with a pullout and 1 real bedroom. Both were comfortable to sleep. Also, if you are a taller individual, you will have to duck a little to use the shower, but otherwise everything was as depicted. It was a wonderful little stay, perfect for what we needed going to-and-from Columbus every day for an event and we would book again.

Property location was excellent. It is within walking distance of Uptown Westerville as well as close proximity to 3 grocery stores. The cottage is directly behind the main house and access is through a common alley with the house next door. Parking and noise were never an issue. The hosts were very friendly and helpful.
