Eagle Point Park

Have a picnic while overlooking one of America’s great rivers and three states on a visit to this park that is popular among residents and travellers.

An elevated portion of Eagle Point Park in Dubuque is perfect for taking pictures of the mighty Mississippi River, the city and surrounding countryside of Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois. Climb observation towers for panoramic views and watch barges traveling up and down the river as they navigate locks that are part of a dam. Expect to see eagles soaring, especially in winter.

The area of the park known as the Riverview Walk, with outstanding views, is the most popular section. However, other elements of the park maintained by the City of Dubuque offer beauty and serenity.

Find all the elements of a quality experience surrounded by nature. Wander or hike the trails to discover something new around many corners. A perfect lazy afternoon in the park may include live entertainment from a band playing in the band shell.

Pavilions dotting the park are available to rent for special occasions. Seating ranges from 12 to 410 people, with outside areas always open to the public. Reserve an enclosed or open-air pavilion to suit your preferences, with picnic tables included. Some even have working fireplaces for cooler weather.

Get some exercise with a game of tennis at one of six well-maintained courts or try a less intense game of horseshoes. Children can amuse themselves in the spray pool or at numerous play areas throughout the park.

The park’s development began in the early 1900s with land being either purchased or donated. By 1912 the attraction was served by streetcars. Enter the park and stop near a large eagle statue that marks where public transit historically used this location as a stopping point. In the 1930s, a beautification project included gardens and pavilions that show an influence of the style of renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

Plan to visit Eagle Point Park between the first Saturday in May and the fourth Sunday in October. Arrive early in the morning for free entry or pay a nominal car entry fee throughout the day.

The park is located in Dubuque’s northern section. Many of the park’s areas provide access for visitors with mobility challenges.
