The Neighborhood:
# About the Area
You're in Essen's Ostviertel, the district that borders the city centre directly. It's a genuinely central, everyday part of town — residential and mixed in character, with Kennedyplatz, the town hall, and Essen's pedestrian shopping street all within a short walk, and the cultural highlights of the Ruhr area an easy ride away.
# Shopping & Essentials
A REWE supermarket is about 7–8 minutes on foot at Viehofer Platz, with an in-store bakery counter, and an ALDI and Rossmann drugstores are within roughly a 10-minute walk. For everything else, Essen's pedestrian shopping zone and the Limbecker Platz mall — one of Germany's largest — are a short walk or one U-Bahn stop away.
# Dining
The Ostviertel itself is quiet on restaurants, but neighbouring Viehofer Platz and the city centre offer plenty within a few minutes' walk — from a classic Ruhr-area Gasthaus to Asian kitchens and steakhouses. For the city's liveliest dining, Rüttenscheid ("die Rü") is a quick U-Bahn ride south.
# Leisure & Attractions
- Zeche Zollverein (approx. 15–20 min by tram) — the UNESCO World Heritage coal mine, the landmark of the Ruhr area
- Museum Folkwang (approx. 20–25 min) — one of Germany's most important art museums
- Grugapark & Messe Essen (U-Bahn, a few minutes from the main station) — a large city park and the trade-fair grounds
- Lake Baldeney (S-Bahn, approx. 15–20 min from the main station) — sailing, walking, and boat trips south of the city
# Host's Insider Tips
- Panoptikum (behind Viehofer Platz, approx. 6–8 min on foot): a Gaststätte going back to 1892 — one of Essen's oldest pubs, all dark wood and local beer, with a genuine regulars' atmosphere most visitors never find
- Feierabendmarkt on Weberplatz (approx. 10 min on foot): a small local evening market on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month (4–8 PM) — regional produce and street food, known mostly to locals because it runs just twice a month
- Rüttenscheider Wochenmarkt (U-Bahn, approx. 10–12 min): one of Essen's biggest weekly markets (Wednesdays and Saturdays) with around 80 stalls — fruit, cheese, fish, and meat straight from the producer, in the heart of the city's best café quarter; everyday Essen, not a tourist stop
Getting Around:
# Parking
Free on-street parking is available directly opposite the building and in the side street — no assigned spaces. This is a popular residential area, so spaces can fill up at busy times; allow a few extra minutes when you arrive, and please observe the local parking signs.
# Public Transport
The Goldschmidtstr. bus stop is about a minute from the door, and the Viehofer Platz stop (U17/U18 light rail and trams 105/107) is around 5 minutes on foot, with direct connections across the city. Essen Hauptbahnhof is about 5–7 minutes away by U-Bahn, or roughly a 15-minute walk.
Tip: download the VRR app to buy single tickets or day passes directly on your phone — no need for cash at the machine.
# By Car
The A40 motorway is close by, and Düsseldorf Airport is around 30 minutes away by car.
