The developers of the yet to be built Florence Mall gave the land to build the water tower to the city in return the tower would be painted as an advertisement reading FLORENCE MALL. Completed in 1974, the water tower almost immediately came under scrutiny for violating the state's law on sign height. The $472 solution? Modify the 'M' into a 'Y', giving the water tower its now famous southern salutation.
