## Emplacement
From its past, Fréjus has preserved a large number of monuments. Indeed, with 2,000 years of history, this city of art and history of the Var has an important historical and architectural heritage.
The Roman remains are the oldest traces of its past and consist of an amphitheatre, a theater and an aqueduct of which some pillars and arcades remain. Dating from the end of the 1st century, the arena could accommodate almost 12,000 spectators who came to watch gladiatorial fights!
In the old town, the episcopal group of Fréjus, built between the 5th and 16th century, is also part of this remarkable heritage. It brings together the beautiful cathedral of Saint-Léonce, with a Romanesque bell tower and two naves connected by several arcades. But also the octagonal baptistery dating from the fifth century, one of the oldest in France, the episcopal palace transformed into a town hall, as well as the Romanesque cloister, whose wooden ceiling has been decorated with real or imaginary characters and animals. The archaeological museum next to the cloister houses remarkable ancient carved pieces from excavations carried out in the Roman city.
