The ancient Roman city of Gadara is located in northwest Jordan near the town of Umm Qais. It is perched on a hilltop overlooking the Sea of Galilee. The Gospels of Matthew and Mark record an encounter between Jesus and a man possessed by a legion of demons. Jesus exorcises the demons, driving them into a nearby herd of pigs, which then run down into the sea and were drowned.
