This is a historic hotel, a group of rooms located in a National Historic Register building. One of the best loved bars of Juneau is downstairs. The room was cozy and comfortable, and shared bath facilities were clean. I made Alaskan friends when I visited the bar. A great, authentic feeling Alaska experience. Don't expect a modern hotel experience - you'll find that in other parts of town.

The bar was so loud until 3am when it closed that we were entirely unable to sleep. And the real kicker was that the receptionist at the front desk knew just exactly how loud the bar was, yet did not think it an important detail when we said we would be waking up at 5am. Apparently two hours of sleep is enough for her? It certainly wasn't for us, who did not sleep the night before due to travelling. If you think the music will be somewhat quiet, think again—we had to speak up inside our hotel room in order to hear each other... until 3am. And the drunk people screaming deranged obscenities in the street weren't exactly charming either. In the interest of fairness though, the hotel room was clean, there were enough towels for us, the pillows met some definition of soft yet were more than half-brick, and the rooms were great for anyone used to temperatures above 75°F (24°C). Unfortunately, we were not. The main condolence is that Alaska's oldest hotel may also have Alaska's oldest unmaintained sprinkler system, so someday soon it will burn to the ground and maybe the neighborhood will be able to sleep before they have to get up in the morning. I nearly rated this two stars because at least the receptionist was friendly, but settled on one star because sleep was impossible and that's the only reason anyone books a hotel in the first place. Not that the receptionist would believe that, though.

Hi Edward,I’m sorry that you had a horrible experience with the noise outside. We gave you a free upgrade from a shared bathroom to a private bath at no extra cost before you even checked in for your convenience. I’m glad you thought the front desk was friendly and that the rooms were clean. Wish you had told us about the loudness. We would have believed you and placed you elsewhere in hopes it’s a bit quieter (however, noises outside of our hotel are out of our control). But you never even gave us the chance to even make it right since you didn’t let us know until this review. We really care about our guests and regret that you had a bad experience and hope you give us another chance if you come through Juneau.

Proactive staff
Staff was super attentive. After booking we were immediately contacted that we selected a room which was next to the back entrance which could be noise. They were ready so move us to another room if that was a problem, but since it was a quite Sunday we figured that it didn’t matter. Yes we did a few people go in and out, but what else can you expect in an old authentic building like this. The room itself was nice, clean and comfortable. Definitely better than some of the harsh reviews that I read.

Quaintly colorful old place, reeks of its time, but comfortably updated. Rooms rather lacking in workspaces though. Ask for kitchen equipment if you've got a kitchenette if they don't offer it. They do have some!

As in to where we may not put kitchen equipment in each of the kitchenette rooms, we do have everything any cook would want provided including but not limited to; Pots, Pans, Frying Pans, and even Rice Cookers. A diverse range of silverware, including but not limited to Knives, Forks, Spoons, Spatula's, Big Spoons with our without straining capability, pairing knives, big kitchen knives, salad tongs and so on. Bizarre experience. Great potential in this old gem. But it does need work. Excellent location. Rooms are hit and miss. We did not like the first room at all. Small and dingy. They nicely found us a second room. We loved it. Overlooked the street so a bit loud one night. The black bears walking down the street night three were hilarious. Like they owned the town. Be forewarned- most metro west coast cities have massive homeless problems. Juneau had some too. Overall they don’t harm anyone, just be prepared. This is an experiment as a property but we got used to the charm.

I read *many* mixed reviews before staying at this property, most complained about the noise, due to the hotel being over the bar. Yes, it is noisy, yes, you can hear yelling from the bar downstairs and occasional music,-- but it's nothing awful. If you are a light sleeper-don't book it. If you live in a city or anywhere with some traffic noise at night, you will be fine. You can also request a room that is NOT over the bar, and those rooms are quiet. This hotel is not at all ADA accessible, there are no elevators. It is smack dab in the heart of downtown, with Rainbow Foods (grocery store) in walking distance, Foggy Mountain (shop for outdoor gear) in walking distance, and two famous and cheap restaurants, as well as a post office--less than 30 seconds from the front door. Deckhand Dave's Fish Tacos and the Alaskan Crepe Escape are some of the best and cheapest food in town, and they are right by it. I felt safer in this location as a young solo woman than I would've on the outskirts of town--yes there are homeless and yes there are drunks, but it is also bustling with tourists 24/7. It is warm, clean, fresh sheets, clean bathrooms. I had some of my best sleep ever in this hotel! Checking in is a bit of a pain, you have to be very assertive and get the bartender's attention--they don't staff the hotel so the bartender must walk over and check you in. French cleaning staff are loud and rude and childish, but you barely interact. Book it!

Diana,I truly do appreciate your honesty that comes with a breathe of fresh air. Most guests do not take the time to provide us with feedback, or if they do it is cut and dry. Good or Bad. I do apologize for the rude behavior of our College students from another country. When you come from a 3rd world country that is very small, your attitude at the end of the season would be a little brass when you are having to face going home, after enjoying a summer away. It is a diversified experience for all involved on many different levels. I am truly thankful that we are so blessed here in the United States, where we are taught from day one social etiquette. Interesting hotel. Bring foam earplugs.
Staff was friendly but the check-in procedure involved contacting the bartender in the first-floor bar, and that took some time. The room was facing the street and there was a lot of street noise (not the hotel's fault obviously). To their credit, after I explained my circumstances (I had contracted Covid-19) they let me check out very late (3 PM) so I could go directly to my next hotel, and didn't charge me for a second night, even though it was within their rights to do so. It was much appreciated.

A Wonderful Vintage Experience
This is a vintage 1913 hotel. The plumbing and electrical have updated yet fixtures are historically “vintage.” The hotel was clean. The bed was “vintage” the room was small. Not all rooms have been updated to have an en-suite. Many rooms share the facilities “down the hall.” We stayed just one short night so we did not get to experience all of the joys of 1913 Juneau.

Excellent Customer Service!
Victoria was amazing! She helped us check in a little early, which was very much appreciated and gave us extra towels. Also, someone in the laundry room was able to give us a blow dryer when we noticed there wasn't one in our room. Very accommodating. The hotel had a lot of character! Loved the details! I didn't love being on the 4th floor, but the exercise was appreciated too!

Some unacceptable things.
Here's the deal, i stayed in rm 208, you have to get some kind of toilet paper holder and toilet paper at least just ouyside the door. Having to walk to thedesk to grt kleenes AFTERusing the toilet is not ok. You must get somekind of door or screen for the bathroom that works. Having it fall off in mu hand wasn't ok. I loved the staff, she was kind, courteously got up at 4:00 am to help an old lady sclep suitcases downstairs, but the above mentioned will keep me from staying or recommending.. I will bot mention these things but please fix them.

Upon arrival I discovered two made beds, rubbish on the floor including insulin syringes, bloody band-aid and two burned out lights. However, upon reporting the discovery, the front desk duo *immediately* and politely resolved *all* concerns without delay and unnecessary excuses or reasons. Bravo, greatly appreciated, and I thank both of you for going out of your way for a prompt rescue. The staff was also very helpful and respectful for luggage storage until the moment I exited for my 2:30 am flight. Multiple affectionate siberian huskies in the pub with their owners? Yes, please. I would stay there again.

Put some effort into this place!
I love staying at historic hotels. And I understand the limitations. However, the stuff the hotel has control over didn’t get attention. For instance, the bedding … the pillow case had a massive hole in it. The hallways were so dirty. It’s a shame.

Don't have high expectations and it'll be fine. The rooms are old in a not well maintained way. The furniture is charming in that they are all old antiques. And yes, it is loud above the bar. Live music on weekends and people are up late. No AC in rooms and the building gets HOT even when it's pretty cool at night. Window didn't want to stay open so I propped it open with a garbage can. Location is convenient since you can walk to everything. Considering the cost elsewhere this was fine at half the price. Just set a low bar.

We had a wonderful time in spite of the STAIRS. It was a pain to lug our luggage up, but we really enjoyed the blue grass band in the bar. The ladies @ the front desk were always friendly. Having the code for the bath down the hall was a pain, but the bed was soft and the surroundings charming.

The hotel was a fun experience. Supposedly it is haunted, so it was a fun time looking for signs of ghosts. Stayed in a room that was very comfortable but near a haunted area. We had a fun night in the bar, and felt very comfortable.

This property is misrepresented on the website. The pictures show clean, bright, spacious, updated rooms. The rooms are cramped with worn out and broken furnishings. The flexible shower head in my bathroom has held up with packing tape. The smell in the rooms was overwhelming mold, mildew and dust. Frankly, my room smelled like cat urine and industrial cleaning chemicals. There were cobwebs in the window sills. It was unseasonably warm when I stayed with no ventilation in the rooms and although I was told upon booking my room was located in a quiet part of the hotel, I heard and felt the music from the bar until 2AM. The website discloses that there are stairs and no elevators, but the steepness and number of stairs was and unpleasant surprise with suitcases. On the plus side, the sheets were clean and the water was hot. We were booked for three nights and the staff graciously cancelled our last 2nights at no charge when we found a different hotel and moved.

This hotel is on the older side, which adds to its charm. It’s noisy- we stayed on a Thursday, and it seemed to die down by midnight. But I imagine weekends are even louder and going longer into the night. We REALLY appreciated Maria at the front desk for allowing us a different(and better) room after the first was too small and hot for our pups. She really went out of her way to make our stay great!it is not easy to find an affordable pet friendly hotel. Thanks Alaskan Hotel!
