The property itself gave us a front-row seat to the awesome forces that are still forming the island of Hawaii: It's adjacent to an area devastated by a 2018 volcanic eruption. It's a great location to explore anywhere on the eastern side of the Big Island, from nearby Kalapana and the Red Road, to Hilo, all the way up to Waipio. The house, which is off the grid and is solar- and battery-powered, has every modern convenience. We hope to stay here again. "
