The Sophienburg Museum & Archives, serves as a comprehensive repository of the city's German-Texan heritage. Established in 1933 on the original site of Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels' 1845 Adelsverein headquarters, the museum houses over 100,000 artifacts, including personal belongings of early settlers, tools, and furnishings that illustrate the daily lives of the community's founders.


The archives feature an extensive collection of over one million photographs, newspapers dating back to 1852, oral histories, and genealogical records as well as permanent exhibits provide insights into the challenges and achievements of German immigrants. A central exhibit, "Telling the Real Stories of German Immigration," delves into the experiences of German colonists who arrived with Prince Carl in 1845.


Additionally, you can explore a reconstructed 1860s fachwerk cabin, providing insight into early settler life, and a circa 1900 city street with 13 businesses, showcasing the commercial development of New Braunfels.


The New Braunfels Historic Railroad and Modelers Society (20-minute drive):


The New Braunfels Historic Railroad and Modelers Society, housed in a restored 1907 International-Great Northern depot, presents a detailed look at the area's railroading legacy. Inside, you can view historical artifacts including railroad china, lanterns, signal equipment, and a preserved Amtrak porter uniform.


A standout feature is the collection of restored rolling stock, such as a 1950s Missouri Pacific caboose, a 1922 Pullman passenger car transformed into a dining car, and a classic baggage car. Model train enthusiasts can explore permanent HO and N scale layouts, the latter located in a converted boxcar at kid-friendly height.


A seasonal exhibit recreates the Joske’s Department Store Christmas train display, complete with a ski lift. The museum also hosts Kids Fun Days twice a month, offering interactive model train experiences.


Panther Canyon Nature Trail (22-minute drive):

Panther Canyon Nature Trail, located within Landa Park in New Braunfels, Texas, offers a 1.8-mile network of trails through the Balcones Escarpment. The main Canyon Trail provides a gentle ascent along a dry creek bed, which flows only after rainfall, and is shaded by native trees like oaks, Ashe juniper, and cedar elm.


The recently added Rim Trail, approximately 0.75 miles long, offers a moderately strenuous hike due to elevation changes and features rocky terrain and switchbacks. A shorter Small Loop Trail, about 0.5 miles, is accessible near Ohio Avenue and provides a moderately challenging route.


The area is home to diverse wildlife, including deer, bats, and various bird species, and showcases flora such as Mexican buckeye and Texas persimmon. Trail amenities include benches and information kiosks, and the paths are marked for easy navigation. Panther Canyon is open daily from 6 a.m. to midnight, offering a natural retreat within the city.
