Derelict crofthouse The stark reality of bygone rural life in Orkney is all too evident here. No romantic, rose-tinted rural idyll. The most basic accommodation, peat fire, tiny windows down one side and a low roof. That's some lintel over the fireplace though.

Wass Wick and Salta Taing Good Norse names. Salta Taing is the prominent tongue sticking out into the sea. The ferry from Rousay to Tingwall can just be spotted.

Derelict building near Cottascarth It would be interesting to know what this was. It's only small, maybe ten or twelve feet across.

Track to Blubbersdale A gorgeous place. The land to the left is part of an RSPB reserve and there is a hide higher up the slopes. Today a female hen harrier was hovering around, sharing the sky with flocks of geese.

The hotel closed all food and beverage service. There was a notice on their website but no notice on Expedia. The surrounding town was largely closed too, so being without food options was not acceptable. The hotel emailed to confirm my reservation. I complained and asked for a cancellation and refund. ...
