Leaks
Having had so many positive VRBO experiences over the last 11 years, I was taken by surprise when I walked into this one. Immediately upon entering the kitchen on day one, I noticed a pungent odor coming from the lower cabinets. I communicated this right away with the property manager. Initially I thought it was old cigarette smoke. However after being reassured no one smoked in there, I discovered a week later and after developing asthma I hadn’t experienced in decades, with the help of their handyman, that it actually was mold. He found multiple areas where black mold was growing under the hardwood floor, under the kitchen sink, alongside the dishwasher and in the sub/crawl space which led to the odor behind the cabinets. A plumber was called to look for active leaks. Two were found and those were just under the kitchen sink! He said a leak locater was needed to go after the rest, which he did not have. The property manager confirmed an older leak as well. All of this requires remediation. Given the magnitude of the issues, I decided to find another rental in the area for my three month stay. I avoided the kitchen area all together for the entire time I was there. It proved difficult to find a place available for a 3 month stay during the busiest summer season. I’m lucky I did. Ultimately, the property manager should have been aware of active leaks and under no circumstances, should have rented the place out with active leaks and mold issues!
