The high-quality furnishings—mostly new solid-wood furniture designed with a sense of space, beauty, and attention to detail—reflect our appreciation for you. The views on three sides—of the forest, garden, and mountains—are captivatingly beautiful. Our vacation home stands on a large property surrounded by fir hedges. In the spacious garden, you’ll find both sunny and shaded spots where you can relax on a variety of outdoor furniture, and you’ll also have the opportunity to barbecue. In front of the house, there are free parking spaces for your car. You can park and store your bicycles in a lockable garage.

The location of our forest house on the Heimig—the name of a nearby wooded mountain—is particularly charming. The forest is just 50 meters from the house, and in just 15 minutes on foot, you can reach the Rennsteig, the high-altitude trail of the Thuringian Forest. A “Dr. Wald” trail invites you to enjoy forest bathing, the Rennsteig Pond beckons you to take a dip in the refreshing water, and an extensive network of trails is a paradise for hiking, biking, and jogging, as it offers every conceivable type of route. Since Schmiedefeld lies on the ridge of the Thuringian Forest, there aren’t many meters of elevation gain to tackle, but depending on your mood, you can also head down into valleys, past reservoirs, and back up again! Running is in the DNA of the people of Schmiedefeld; the town is the annual destination for the GutsMuths Rennsteig Run, Germany’s largest cross-country race. So lace up your hiking or running shoes right in your vacation rental—or, in winter, your ski boots! The cross-country ski trails start practically right behind the house. Or are you in the mood for downhill skiing? Right across from the house is the Winterwelt Schmiedefeld, complete with a ski lift and downhill run. And for your first tobogganing adventure, it’s just a 10-minute walk from our house into the forest! And if you ever want to take a break from cooking in your vacation rental, there are six restaurants within walking distance in Schmiedefeld! In town, you’ll also find a REWE supermarket, a butcher shop, a bakery, a doctor’s office, and a pharmacy. For those who love swimming, Schmiedefeld has a spacious forest pool, and in Ilmenau you’ll find an outdoor pool with a variety of water slides and a diving tower. Ilmenau also features an indoor swimming pool and, from October through April, an indoor ice rink.

And if you’d like to treat your mind as well as your body: Welcome to the cultural heartland of Thuringia! Johann Sebastian Bach spent half his life here; the Bach Church in Arnstadt is just a 40-minute drive away. It takes just as little time to reach an opera, concert, or play at the Meiningen State Theater. Or follow in Goethe’s footsteps and, like the master, climb the Kickelhahn, where on the evening of September 6, 1780, Goethe wrote one of his most beautiful poems on the wooden wall of what was then a simple hunting lodge—beginning with “Above all peaks there is peace…” “The Wanderer’s Night Song” has since been translated into more than 50 languages.
