Franeker is a interesting litte town with a rich history. "downtown" you will find the the world's oldest functioning planetarium. It was build by Eise Eisinga in his living room, partly to prove the end of the world was not near at all. Although Eisinga was a patriot in 1787 (not a fan of kings), his house is now a official government (and royal) monument. http://www.planetarium-friesland.nl/en
