Alaverdi Monastery is situated 20km North-West of Telavi. The 56m high St. Georges Cathedral was built in the 11th century and was the highest building in whole Georgia at its time. The dimensions also today are impressive.

This fortress ruin is located on top of the hill and still enclosed by a 3-5 m high wall with a chapel on its ground. The fortress is located 1 km off the road, half way between Tianeti and Akhmeta. But please be aware that the "road" between Tianeti and Akhmeta, shown on most maps in fact is a 21 km long mountain dirt road for which I would recommending a 4W drive, even I saw several 2W drive cars dragging along with some 10km/h and probably touching ground more than once. The last 1-1.5 km up-hill to the fortress are challenging, even with a 4W-Drive. So in case of doubt ... better take a walk!
July 2010 Chesho village, Tusheti region, Caucasus, Georgia Chesho is a village between Dartlo and Parsma in a lovely bend of the Pirikiti Alazani river. It is on the route from Omalo to Shatili, the most popular trek in this part of Georgian Caucasus.
July 2010 Keselo Fortress, Kvemo Omalo, Tusheti One of the towers of Keselo, a medieval fortress consisting of 13 towers built in 14-15th century, altitude is ca. 2.000 metres. The fortress originally served as protection against Mongol invaders and later against Dagestani invaders. It was mostly used only in summer months when the raids were usual. In winter people lived in the village below the fortress. It has lost its purpose in 19th century after the Russians allied with local Tushs. It was abandoned and destroyed during World War II. In 2003 the reconstruction started and sponsored by a Dutch family. Many of the towers were built back from ruins, accomodating a museum of local tradition with many old photos from the region. Keselo is few tens of metres over the village Kvemo (=Upper) Omalo, which is a usual starting point for trek west to Shatili in Khevsureti region or day hikes to Shenako or Diklo villages to the east.

Beautiful small hotel with a very very good kitchen. Staff could be a little more engaging but I guess this also has to do with the essential learning curve of the tourism industry. Super good wine selection but you really have to ask the manager for advice because staff have no idea of what’s on ...
