• A plane trip can be a pleasure if you've got all the right stuff. Firstly, you'll need basic toiletries, such as a toothbrush and lip balm, a clean pair of socks and a good book. Next, find room in your bag for your laptop, a charger, medications and maybe a blow-up neck pillow as well. Last, but definitely not least, remember to bring your passport, travel papers and some money.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Pack all your full-sized bottles of hair gel and hairspray in your checked baggage. Any liquids or gels in your carry-on suitcase larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) will be confiscated. Sharp or pointed objects, like a Swiss Army knife, and dangerous goods which are explosive or flammable, such as spray paint, flares and matches, are also banned.

What to wear on a flight:

• The aisles of a plane are no place for a fashion parade. Layer up with comfortable clothing and opt for shoes that are flat, enclosed and easy to remove.
• The result of sustained periods of immobility, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot condition that can affect some passengers on long-distance flights. Reduce the risks by staying hydrated, keeping your legs moving and wearing compression socks to help your circulation.

The secret is to be well organised before you get to the airport security gate. That way, you'll be boarding that plane to The Valley in the blink of an eye. Follow these helpful tips and get your holiday off to a flying start:

• First things first. Your travel ID and boarding pass will need to be shown to security personnel. Keep them at hand so you don't hold up the line.
• Time to strip down. Well sort of. Your coat, belt, keys and other small items, like your headphones, will be required to go through the X-ray machine. Make your life easier by removing them before your turn arrives.
• All your electronics, including your phone and tablet, will also need to be scanned separately.
• Any liquids or gels, such as shampoo or hairspray, that you want to bring on board need to be in containers no greater than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres). Also, everything must fit inside a quart-size (one litre), clear zip-close bag.
• There's a good chance you'll be asked to remove your shoes for scanning, so wearing lightweight sneakers is always a good idea.
• Take all prohibited items out of your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp objects like a pocket knife or tools, put them in your checked baggage. They won't be allowed in the cabin.
