Mini snow rollers! A weather phenomenon where light snow atop a slick substrate, such as ice, is blown by wind into cylindrical rolls. These guys are golf ball size, but a couple years ago, in this same location, there were ones bigger than watermelons. #WinterWonders
The bladder-like follicles of Gomphocarpus physocarpus expelling its seed. This plant is a species of milkweed native to southeast Africa. The fruit of the plant is a three inch in diameter, inflated spheroid, covered with rough hairs. Because of this attribute the plant is marketed in North America as a cut flower under the trade name 'Hairy Balls".
As a simple rule, I despise litter. However, on a rare occasion, nature puts a surprising twist on man's folly. An old discarded glass bottle has been turned into a beautiful natural terrarium thanks to some opportunistic moss. The Hoover Scenic Walkway originates on Walnut Street across from Miller Park beside the Galena Cemetery. The trail follows the old Penn Central Railroad bed has been converted into a ½-mile trail that traverses an old railroad bridge over the Little Walnut Creek. From the main trail, head down creek-side and follow the creek for a lengthier jaunt through the wilderness.
