Mökki Hovland Hut - A Unique Glass Wall Timber Frame Nestled in a Maple Forest
10/10 Excellent
"Greetings! My husband of 22 years and I are celebrating our anniversary in the sweetest little Finnish mökki tucked away in Minnesota’s Arrowhead region. We’re completely surrounded by maple trees. There’s no electricity, no running water, and our bathroom is an outhouse hidden in the woods. We had one exciting moment getting here—the road ended with a pretty rough hill, and if the Subaru Outback hadn’t made it, we would have been carrying all of our food and luggage for about fifteen minutes. Thankfully, the Subaru proved itself once again! It’s so peaceful here. We’ve unplugged from the world for a few days. No news, no endless scrolling—just simple meals, reading, writing, and listening to the wind in the trees. The Finns have a wonderful idea about a mökki. It’s a place to slow down and enjoy ordinary moments. I’ve discovered those ordinary moments are pretty extraordinary. The cabin is crafted in a dovetail timber log building technique. The 16’ by 16’ is meticulously embraced by glasswalls on east and south side showcase the knee braces, both from the inside and outside. At first it feels like giving things up, but it quickly becomes something else entirely. Mornings without alarms, tea by lantern light, long walks instead of scrolling. The noise of the city fades, and what’s left is simple and steady. It turns out you don’t need much to feel grounded. Just time, stillness and each other."
"Beautiful old cabin with updated elegance. There were huge windows everywhere and there was a great view of Lake Superior from just about everywhere in the house (maybe except the basement). We loved the private location with our own access to the rocks on the shore. There is absolutely no other homes or people within sight of the cabin- we loved the secluded location. We had everything we needed in the kitchen, and appreciated the coffee, tea, and spices available - we even noticed the kid Tylenol in a medicine cabinet... while we didn't need it, we imagined that it could be very appreciated by a family with a sick kid.The TV with Roku was appreciated on a rainy, stormy day- along with the foosball and pool tables tucked away in the basement. My daughter even used the extra space in the basement to practice her dance routines in a more private part of the house. The house was very clean, including all those windows looking out over Lake Superior! They looked like they must have been cleaned before our arrival- I've never noticed such clean windows before! And our host checked in with us to make sure everything was going okay, which it was, and she was very quick with her responses.I'm not sure if we'll find ourselves back so far north anytime soon, but if we do, we will easily try to stay here again. Thank you for a great time!"

Pet Friendly✦Sauna✦5 min to Lake Superior✦15 min to downtown GM ✦In Maple Forest
10/10 Excellent
"This cabin and its relaxing retreat was exactly what we needed. It is beautiful designed, decorated, has all the amenities needed with peace and tranquility elevated living — even with a dry cabin experience. The bedroom is stunning (just like the whole cabin) and the bed was so comfortable and cozy! The sauna was a huge perk we enjoyed—and during our daily sauna amongst the ferns we loved listening to the nearby sled dogs howling for dinner—magical! Being surrounded by the maple tree canopy in a peaceful environment makes us think how amazing a fall color trip would be. We spent a day canoeing and fishing on trout lake, which fishing definitely reflected its name and I highly recommend. We didn’t make it to hiking due to high rainfall but there’s always next time! Host communication was quick and thoughtful, no details to remember were missed. They accepted booking quickly thankfully after we diverted from our yearly boundary waters trip after being called to deploy the next week. We are so grateful for this week together, making restful memories, and look forward to enjoying more adventures with Great Northern Cabins. Thank you!"
MYSA House is an Enchanting, pet friendly chalet with WiFi in Grand Marais
10/10 Excellent
"We didn't fully appreciate the solitude of Mysa house while being so close to Grand Marais and 61. The kitchen had all the necessities (and niceties) for our meals and the views along with nightly fires were absolutely restorative. We have recommended Mysa house to friends!"
