The Great Bernera Bridge and Standing Stones Opened in 1953. It was the first example of a bridge made of pre-stressed concrete girders in the UK. A model of the bridge was exhibited at the 1951 festival of Britain. It totally transformed the island of great Bernera - which might have become uninhabited without the bridge crossing the Sruth Iarsiadar. http://www.cne-siar.gov.uk/eriskay/bernera.htm The standing stones are probably the remains of a stone circle and have watched over this obvious crossing point for several millennia. http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/site/568/bernera_bridge_circle.html#fieldnotes
