Jakarta was an unexpected stop on my journey home, and I booked the Mandarin Oriental at the last minute. The price was surprisingly reasonable for a Mandarin Oriental, though it’s clear why it’s not as expensive as some of the group’s other locations worldwide — it doesn’t have the same “flash” or ultra-luxury feel you might find in, say, Taiwan.
What really stood out was the service, which went above and beyond. I had a problem with a taxi attempting to overcharge me and even pretend my payment hadn’t gone through, but the concierge quickly sorted it out and personally ensured I was protected. I requested a high floor and a good view — not only did I get both, but I was also upgraded. A welcome drink on arrival was a nice touch, and the staff were consistently attentive.
The restaurants were great — I tried the cake shop and the level-two restaurant, both of which were excellent and reasonably priced. The location is also very convenient, with a shopping center just across the road, which was perfect for my six-hour stay.
As for the room, while the view was spectacular, the room itself was quite standard — clean and functional, but not the standout luxury you might expect from a Mandarin Oriental.
