This was our third visit to Coombe Farm Cottages in as many years, so that tells you what you need to know: it's the sort of place you can't wait to come back to. Dozmary cottage is just lovely – well equipped, clean, comfortable and with some very nice decorative touches. There's an outdoor patio with barbecue and a large area of grass that's all yours, too, so ideal if you have children or dogs. The farm itself is very well located for everything north Cornwall has to offer (although you do need a car). Over the years we've visited beaches at Bude, Widemouth (and a couple of secret locations Lou and Jez will let you in on if you're lucky); the Eden Project; Tintagel; Boscastle, as well as checking out great local pubs and restaurants (again, Lou and Jez are good for recommendations) and walks on Bodmin. But it's also just as fun – and very relaxing – to spend the day hanging out at the farm. Wake to the sound of the cockerel crowing, then start your day with the 8am tour of the animals, where 'Farmer Jez' helps the kids feed the pigs, sheep, goats and chickens – a fantastic experience for our urban urchins. Then buy some of the farm's own eggs, sausages and bacon and head back to the cottage for a divine full English. The kids are free to play in the playground, explore the farm, pet the dogs and cats and make friends with whoever else is staying on site. And if it's summer season the outdoor pool is open – and heated!
Lou and Jez are the perfect hosts, happy to chat if you want advice and recommendations, but also busy with their own family life and content to let you keep yourselves to yourselves if you prefer. We've also stayed in Morvoren cottage (lovely, best for couples or with one small child) and Silyback (very much like Dozmary, no garden just patio but direct access onto the playground) – all highly recommended.
A final point: while I can't guarantee good weather, we've always been blessed on our visits. And, situated as it is in a coombe (which I learned is a small valley!), the farm is sheltered and seems to have it's own microclimate, as well as beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. We will be back!
