  • We spent yesterday arvo bush-bashing down to the Zig Zag Railway viaducts above Lithgow, NSW and looking around the place for a few hours. In this shot you can see the No. 1 Viaduct on the Top Road track. A little further down is the larger No. 2 Viaduct. And on the Bottom Road (which is the train line near the bottom of this pic) is the No. 3 Viaduct. Comprising rock cuttings, classical sandstone viaducts and tunnels, the Lithgow Zig Zag was, and remains to this day, a magnificent piece of engineering. Construction of this part of the rail system began in 1866 and was completed by the late 1890s. The line was decommissioned in 1910 with the construction of the Ten Tunnels deviation which is still in use today by state rail. Back in the early 1970s, volunteers worked to bring the line back into operation as an iconic tourist railway which ran for decades, bringing with it tourism dollars to the wider Lithgow area. In 2013, a huge bushfire swept through the area and destroyed a lot of the infrastructure and equipment used by the Zig Zag Railway. Since that day work has proceeded to slowly bring the tourist train line back into operation It is hoped it'll be up and running again in the next year or so. The Lady at the park answered my call quickly and came over to check me in soon after I rang. The cabin was very clean and comfortable, warming up quickly . I would certainly recomend this park to everyone in the future..

Two bedroom cabin

The cabin was presented extremely well and whilst the upgrade was welcomed with delight, it came with a couple of challenges for my elderly mother. The step to the porch was a little steep for her to negotiate with no hand rails. The bathroom would be much more comfortable with a heat lamp installed. Overall, on our short stay, we found the managers very friendly and the park to be highly recommendable to anyone visiting the area.

We stay here whenever we visit the area. Family friendly. Helpful staff. Kids love exploring the area. Cabins are cosy, warm and comfortable.

Great small place close to town centre

Love how they provided electric blankets, there is heater and small cooling aircon in the room. The walls didn't have much insulation though so if you turn off heating before going sleep in winter, you end up really cold in the mornings. The beds are soft with not strong support so neither of us slept well at night, woke up sore due to insufficient quality sleep esp after spending whole day hiking.

Peaceful Area

It was a pleasure staying at the Lithgow Tourist & Van Park as the Hosts where most helpful and obliging and assisted me with dispatching my husband's luggage to St Vincent's Hospital on my belhalf as he was admitted unexpectantly whilst we where in Sydney and his luggage was personally hand delivered to him the following day which I was very grateful for. I would highly recommend the Lithgow Tourist & Van Park for visiting as they are very accommodating going above and beyond to ensure you have an enjoyable peaceful stay.
