Island in the Afon Ystwyth, Grogwynion The gravel banks in the Afon Ystwyth at Grogwynion are rich in heavy metals due to past mining activity on the adjacent hillsides. This prevents many plant species which would normally populate such areas from getting hold here. As a result, the island is covered mostly in gorse, heather, and some hardy broadleaved grass. Wolf spiders can also be found in great numbers in this habitat. Cwm Ystwyth runs east to west in this area, which means that the sun never reaches the valley bottom in winter. This impressive display of hoarfrost was the result during an early December cold spell.

There were power cuts in the village which caused a multitude of problems for the staff but they went the extra mile and did everything they could to make all the guests as comfortable as possible. On that basis alone, we would highly recommend.

Difficult to assess as visited in early March, so very much out of season. No hot food on premises. Swimming pool cool (heating issues) on the two occasions we tried, Steam room and jacuzzi were OK, Sauna was out of action. Pool Showers out of action on first visit. Enjoyed the 9 hole pitch and putt. ...

Myself, 4 girlfriends and 2 dogs very much enjoyed our stay at quirky hedgehog view. The outlook from the property onto the Welsh hills was gorgeous, and the hot tub was lovely.
