It is not easy to find properties that are pet friendly so we are always keen to try them out. Birches Apartment was a good size with a comfortable layout and in a great location close to much of what Melbourne has to offer. The bed was comfortable with good quality Hotel type sheets. Yes it’s a bit tired with the age and style of the building but it’s fairly typical of other places we’ve tried in the past when we need to stay with our two small dogs. The shower was over the bath and bathroom decor is old but shower was hot so that’s great. The initial price given for our stay didn’t mention extra fees for pets and parking so it ended up more expensive than we first thought. I believe the Hotel websites need to be more transparent about extras as some places say “pet friendly - fees apply”and others don’t say this but still charge extra. Makes it hard to compare properly. The parking area was good in a secure location and close to our apartment (message property to check prices). As we take great care of anywhere we stay, it would be much fairer to take a bond for pets and refund if the owners do the right thing…

I was sent an email less than 3 hours before check in, saying that they have had to cancel my reservation due to unexpected circumstances. No phone call. Just an email. I had already started driving to the hotel from regional Victoria. I tried to call the manager who sent the email - no answer. Called the reception, who said that they have ongoing renovations and the room sustained damage. I requested assistance with relocating me to another hotel. They had to call me back. I get a call back with the name of the alternate accommodation, which was over 4km away from this hotel, and was not suitable. I called Expedia who were trying to contact the hotel, when I received a message from the hotel saying that my room is now available. I questioned what had changed in the last hour where the room was damaged, to now available. I was just told that the room was ready. I arrived about 30 mins later (2:30pm) and the room was being cleaned. They gave me the key and told me they will call when it is ready. They didn’t call. The room was very dirty, the couch has stains all over it and there was food left in the fridge. Aside from the cleanliness, the room was as described - it’s an old apartment that needs a lot of fixing up. Safety is another major concern, there is homeless people camped outside and the police were knocking on the door of the next apartment at 7am. I wouldn’t let my wife stay here alone. I would steer clear of this property- terrible service and feels unsafe.
