  • #TroveOn Yes, Monteriggioni just might be the quintessential walled medieval village in Tuscany. It's small enough to perhaps be called "cute" but you won't catch me using this term. Monteriggioni began as a border fortress built on a round hill by Sienna against the Florentines. It is famous for the intact defensive structure that held up against repeated Florentine attacks in the 11th century; its 10 meter high walls and 14 towers can still be seen for miles around. Monteriggioni has been featured in movies as a typical medieval village. The village is slightly elliptical in shape with two gates (a third has been plugged). The major gate tourists will use when coming from the parking lot, Porta Franca, owes its name to the Via Francigena--Monteriggione was a major stop on the pilgrimage trail from Cantebury to Rome. The Romanesque Church of Santa Maria Assunta will offer assistance with housing for modern pilgrims traveling the Francigena pilgrimage route. Monteriggioni was a sleepy village of farmers and sheep herders as late as the 1960's. Today it exists entirely for tourists and pilgrims. You'll find wine shops, a tasting room, restaurants and hotels in the small village. This is not neccessarily a disadvantage, although some times it's nice to see some locals puttering about once in a while. Where is Monteriggioni? Monteriggioni is located in the province of Siena, 14km to the northwest of Siena (54km from Florence). While it can be done as a day trip from Siena, you might be better off staying the night--Monteriggioni is much more evocative when the tourists leave late in the afternoon and you can sit in a courtyard sipping a glass of Chianti. Monteriggioni is surrounded by vineyards, and is known for its wine production.

  • Cascate del Diborrato - Parco fluviale dell'Elsa Inside the residential area of Colle Val d'Elsa is a historic and natural landscape of enormous value thanks to the Elsa River which crosses the Val d'Elsa creating a unique territory. The river creates enchanting corners for hiking and observing: the engineering works for gathering water, the artifical canal system for carrying the water to the city, the caves. A particularly suggestive point is the Diborrato water falls, a 15m jump which is more than 10m deep, a sort of small lake where the locals used to go to cool off. Other places not to miss are the Grotta dell'Orso, the Conchina, the Masso Bianco, the Nicchia and the Spianata dei Falchi, each with its own particularities. This natural richness has been recognized with the institution of a protected area in the River Park of the Upper Val d'Elsa which includes the path of the river from the city of Colle Val d'Elsa which stretches from Ponte Santa Giulia to Ponte di Spugna and includes the Caldane, thermal springs which were known to the Etruscans and Romans.

Villa was perfect and its location was great for daily explorations to other cities. Good restaurants in the area. The owners, Giancarlo and Paola were wonderful hosts and very helpful and gave us good recommendations for dinners. Gianni was also a good resource for us.The pool and surrounding patio area was good for relaxing and the villa was well equipped for our stay.We even went on a special excursion with the owners, who went out of their way to make our stay a memorable one.

Amazing Location & Hospitality

My wife and I both loved this property. The host (Gianni) was responsive to any questions we had. Gianni's parents (Carlo & Paula) live in the adjacent main house and were extremely hospitable. We honestly couldn't have asked for a better location or host/s. We would recommend this property to anyone that wants to visit Tuscany.

Lovely Tuscan hideaway

As a family of 4 with two kids (18 and 17) we had a great stay here. The pool was lovely (and needed with the warm Tuscan weather). We were well located for day trips to Florence and Siena, and enjoyed an amazing meal in the hilltop village of Monteriggioni. If you are looking for a nice place to stay in Tuscany that is a bit hidden away, but well equipped and not too far from some lovely places, then I'd recommend this property.

This accommodation is perfectly located to explore Tuscany by car. Easy to get to and easy to access all the major attractions of Tuscany. Tuscany travels

We had a wonderful stay! Gianni helped us have e-bikes delivered and we spent our days touring the area. It was easy to bike to Chianti, San Gimignano, Siena. There is a grocery store nearby, so we gathered dinner supplies and looked forward to a swim and dinner under the vines by the pool at the end of the day.

Great stay. Paula and Jean Carlo who live on the property were awesome.

Excellent accommodations and great location to explore Chianti region. Paula made us dinner one night and it was excellent and couldn’t do enough for us. We invited them for drinks and snacks one night and we ended up drinking and eating all night with them. List of fun. Place is clean and grounds immaculate and pool is nice.

Fantastic property

The property itself was clean, well equipped & the amenities were great. The pool was exceptional & clean. The surrounding garden was immaculate, spacious & included a bbq which we used. A car is a must to explore beautiful Tuscany. The parents of the host live at the back of the property and they were extremely friendly & helpful. Amazing place in the heart of Tuscany

This place exceeded all of our expectations. The host and his family were amazing and very accommodated. Perfect size for two couples. Bedrooms and bathrooms were private. The location was perfect. We were able to take daily trips everywhere in Tuscany between 15 minutes and one hour. The house and pool were even better than the pictures portray. The place came stocked with everything you need For your vacation. If ever back in Tuscany I would definitely stay here again.

Our Great Italian Vacation

This was great property for the four of us. Each couple had their own bedroom and bath. The living space and kitchen area were a great place for us to talk and relax. A very clean, beautiful property with a great pool and patio area which we took full advantage of. On our first night it was a real treat to have our very hospitable hosts fix us a delicious Italian dinner. A fun evening with great food and it made the first night easy.

A wonderful place and experience!

The property was very well kept and immaculate. The pool was beautiful and a lovely place to relax during down time. The kitchen was very well appointed. The owners were on site and responsive when you needed them but not invasive of your privacy. Actually it was perfect! I think all four of us enjoyed getting to know our hosts. We wanted our experience in Italy to include getting to know the people. This was possible at this location. We actually felt like we became friends in the 11 days we were there. We really enjoyed the dinner at their home and our trip with them to a festival in a nearby town. I highly recommend this beautiful home for your vacation.

Being a VRBO property owner, I am sensitive about good ratings. However, I am not happy to be giving a 3-star review on a property that had received so many positive reviews; I had very high expectations and chose this property based on the many positive reviews. First, I will begin with positive comments: (1) central location to the many walled towns in Tuscany-one of the main reasons we chose this property; (2) the villa is attractive, clean, and mostly authentic; (3) the pool & grounds are nice; (4) the kitchen was adequately equipped; (5) linens and towels were fine. Second, comments about wasn't so good: (1) the adjacent factory activity can be heard at times; (2) the coffee maker uses pods that are not available at a grocery store, but Gianni said he would supply them for a cost of 5 Euros for 10; (3) the property gate requires getting out of your car to punch in the code-very inconvenient especially if bad weather. At 7:00 am when we were leaving the property for the airport, the gate to the driveway would not open for us to be able to leave and fortunately we had a phone number for Gianni's parents who did not speak English but we were able to communicate the problem with the gate and they came to property to manually open the gate. This delayed us by 30 minutes & more importantly, if Gianni's parents were not available to open the gate, we could have missed our flight because there was no way to drive off the property. Hence, the main reason for the 3-star rating!

What an amazing experience! I highly recommend this hidden gem. The property was beautifully manicured. The hosts took such great care of us. They made the most amazing home made meal. Perfect House for a family holiday

Beautiful house with a fantastic and very clean pool, perfect for families with children. The location is also very good, close to famous tourist spots such as Siena, Firenze, Voltera or San Gimignano. The parents of the owner welcomed us very warmly and were available for any questions. We had a great holiday and can definately recommend the place to other guests.

What a wonderful vacation!

We loved our stay! The house is lovely, very clean and in a wonderful location. The pool is huge and very clean and we enjoyed it every day. Gianni, Giancarlo and Paola were fantastic hosts- they cooked us wonderful dinners, were always available to help, answer questions or give tips and advice. We stayed for 2 weeks and it was an absolutely incredible and memorable vacation for our family. It truly is a little slice of Italian heaven! We hope to come back and would recommend this villa and our wonderful hosts to anyone!

Hidden gem; highly recommended

We had a wonderful week at Casa Rigioni - our wonderful hosts struck the perfect balance between attentiveness and giving us privacy during a very much need break! Casa Rigioni is a hidden gem with lush gardens and a lovely pool. The villa itself is well appointed and spacious. It is a short walk to a great bus route to Monteriggioni, Siena and San Gimignano. Highly recommended!
