But, on this day, we can all point back to a place and time when that was all still true, and, for some strange reason, it did not matter.

We were the United States, not a conglomeration of battling fiefdoms. Or, more correctly, we were both.

But we all saw the common good as clearly and as distinctly as if it were written on the sky.

Happy Birthday, America! Every year we get a chance to come together and to put our differences aside.
