Calella Villas | Expedia

Let me preface these discoveries by saying that I ended up in Calella haphazardly. It is not necessarily a town that I would generally recommend. It is not your traditional Spanish/Catalan dream destination. It very much looks like something the 70's spit out and no one ever bothered to clean up.

With that said, I freaking love this little freakish town, which I quickly & affectionately nicknamed "The Twilight Zone."

The strangest occurrences happened throughout the month, yes MONTH, I lived in Calella.

Apparently since the 70's, Calella, was a booming tourist destination for Western Europeans and the British. It has been on a massive decline over the past decade. What's left behind though are some fun Dutch and English/Irish pubs, a small welcoming expat community, and one of the most incredible beaches you will ever lay your eyes on.

Beautiful clean white sand for miles and crystal clear turquoise water. Parties & bars on the beach, some free concerts in the summer time and of course drinking it allowed as well.

If you happen to find yourself here, you must stop in at Beach Boys Club, tell the owners, Brian & Cathy, that Amber sent you. Then hit up Brian for his secret stash of American imported Budweiser (Did you know the bottled stuff is always produced in country? Brian believes the secrets in the water, so he gets the cans from the US. Brian is British, which makes this little story even better.)

Also, be prepared to eat a lot of rotisserie chicken.

"Pros: The house had everything we needed and more, with all the facilities as shown in the pictures and plenty of space inside and outside. Was very clean and tidy on arrival. Marcelo the host was great, easy communication before arriving, friendly, helpful during the stay with recommendations of places to eat, taxis etc and flexible with check out times. Cons: Nothing wrong in regards to the villa, but no local shop so need to plan trips ahead for food/drink. Didn’t cause us any problems...

"Pros: La casa està muy bien para hacer vida en el exterior, el interior no está mal pero necesita de alguna reforma. Aunque haya ventiladores en todas las habitaciones hemos echado de menos aunque sea en el comedor el aire acondicionado. "Super clean room with all of the necessary amenities. Location is terrific if you want to walk Mataró or take the train to Barcelona or Girona. We were there in the winter so can't speak to the crowds of summer but plenty was open and there are lots of options for food nearby. Just be aware that there is free parking for only 30 min. inside the marina gates but then you can go onto the nearby street and park for free. The spa, although a little pricey, is an exceptional treat. "
