Pause to appreciate and take photos of the multicolored facade of this private residence while touring the streets of a Caribbean island.
While on Isla Mujeres, visit Crayola House, an elaborately painted building located on a back street. Make this one of your stops when exploring the island via a rented bike or golf cart. Bring your camera to snap shots of the Crayola House to show your friends and family back home. Linger a while to admire the colorful artistry of this landmark that looks like it has been lifted out of a cartoon.
The house is a two-story residence with a terrace and large ornamental arches on the upper floor. Balconies run along the ground level and terrace, each with numerous pillars that resemble Crayola crayons. A black and white checkerboard pattern, painted spheres and zebra-style patterns add more color to the ground floor. Note the circular niche decorated with the painting of landscape scenery.
Look up at the arches to see images of a butterfly, frog, lizard and scorpions. On a wall behind the arches is a flamboyant mandala and a psychedelic design.
The road outside is often quiet so you’ll have plenty of time to find the right angle for your photos. Pay attention to how some of the neighboring houses have followed the trend of brightening up the street with striking paint schemes.
Located on Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez street, the house is a 15-minute drive from Isla Mujeres’ downtown district. You’ll find numerous agencies that offer bike and golf cart rental on the island.
Continue your island adventure by traveling south to Punta Sur, home to a scenic path, giant sculptures and a lighthouse. Visit Garrafon Natural Reef Park for kayaking, snorkeling, swimming and zip lining.
The best time to visit Crayola House is during daylight hours. Remember that this is a private home so respect the privacy of the owners, especially when taking photos.
