Düsseldorf: former factory building "Plange Mühle" at sunset
Highest position on Explore: #155 on Saturday, July 30, 2010 Düsseldorf’s waterfront has been spectacularly transformed into an architectural wonderland with a collection of striking contemporary buildings. The place (Medienhafen) is supposed to resemble an outdoor art museum, with trendies, radio stations, advertising agencies and other assorted fashionistas making it their literal and spiritual home. Starting in the early 1980′s, the 234 metre height Rheinturm tower, featuring the world’s largest decimal clock, became the symbol of Düsseldorf. Later, Californian architect Frank Gehry (of Bilbao’s Guggenheim Museum fame) was responsible for Neuer Zollhof 1 and 2, the twin über-quirkily shaped white/aluminium-clad building block creations. You simply can’t miss either the 62-metre high Colorium tower block full of blue, red and yellow coloured panels by British designer William Alsop, or the Neuwerk and Roggendorf-Haus blocks complete with 29 colourful giant human-like figures hanging onto the facade like so many Spiderman-lost-his-way parodies.
