First, when we arrived, the house was not adequately prepared for our visit. Many beds were missing linens and pillows, and no towels were in any of the bathrooms. We located a closet where most items were shoved on shelves/ not folded so the cleanliness of each was unclear. Furthermore, the pillows were dirty yet we had no choice but to use them.
Second, the dishes/glasses in the kitchen needed to be cleaned and the pots/pans had peeling surfaces and burnt food that hadn’t been cleaned well. Also, the drawer of utensils appeared to contain insect scat. In addition, on the day we ARRIVED we received a message from the host stating that there were long-term renters during Covid and the “oven does seem to work but there is a small countertop oven.” This was an understatement as the regular oven was missing a knob, so it was not usable at all and the “countertop oven” that was referenced was just a toaster oven. As a result of this last minute misinformation, we had to completely alter the family dinner plans we had scheduled for 20 people because a toaster oven was a ludicrous alternative. We were in town for a family wedding and the broken oven disrupted our schedule.
Next, the house contained many broken items (towel racks, toilet paper holders & blinds) and light fixtures that were missing bulbs/globes. Broken patio furniture was tossed off to the side in the back and the overall patio, including the grill, had seen better days. Additionally, in the side yard under a bedroom window were 6 large trash bags, including one that had apparently been ripped open by animals and trash was scattered around. A little further past the side yard was a boarded-up trailer and more trash. Finally, the house had an issue with ants and mice droppings in some of the rooms and the A/C on one side of the house stopped working the second day into our 5-day rental.
Lastly, we attempted to work out a resolution with the host by contacting her on the second day. She said she was going to refund half our money and send someone to the house to investigate our complaints, but she did not. She ignored all of our attempts to contact her and also made false claims through VRBO to extort the $200 damage fee. We have pictures that support our complaints and pictures/video that dispute her untruths.
Never have we ever encountered anyone as unethical and who displayed such disgraceful behaviors toward their guests as this host.
