• Air travel can be easy if you bring the right stuff. First of all you'll need basic toiletries, such as toothpaste, a toothbrush and some deodorant, a spare change of clothes and a few magazines. Next, make room in your bag for your phone and charger, any vital medications and perhaps a proper neck pillow as well. Lastly, and most importantly, don't forget to bring your passport, travel documents and your credit cards.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Pack all your full-sized bottles of shampoo and hairspray in your checked luggage. Any gels or liquids in your carry-on suitcase larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) won't be allowed on. Sharp or pointed objects, like your precious Swiss Army knife, and products which are flammable or explosive, such as flares, bleaching agents and poisons, are also restricted.

What to wear on a flight:

• Your main aim is to feel as comfortable as possible. Opt for flat, closed-toe shoes, dress in loose, breathable clothing and don't forget to bring a pullover in case you get cold in the cabin.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition caused by prolonged inactivity, can be a risk on long-haul flights. Make a point of walking around the cabin or do some gentle exercises in your seat to promote better circulation.

Being organised before your flight will help make your getaway to Saint-Andre a breeze. We've rounded up some useful tips and tricks for a speedy journey through security:

• Be sure to have your passport and travel documents close by. They're the first items you'll be asked to present to airport security.
• The X-ray machine comes next. Remove anything metal on you that is likely to set off the scanner's alarm. This includes items like headphones or earphones, as well as heavy coats or jackets. They'll need to be placed on the conveyor belt for screening.
• All electronic devices, including your phone and laptop, must also be scanned separately.
• Remember to remove gels and liquids from your hand luggage. They usually need to be sent through the X-ray separately. Each product should be no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and everything must fit in a single quart-size (one litre), clear zip-lock bag.
• The right choice of footwear can save you several valuable minutes. Boots and bulky shoes are often required to be removed and separately scanned. Lightweight sneakers are usually not.
• Airlines will not allow any sharp or pointed objects to come on board with you. If you need to bring these kinds of items, check them in.
