Wonderful stay but please heed the advice re:ticks
This was such a cool property. So peaceful and beautiful. Partner and I came here to get away - loved the views, fresh air, starry skies. We were really looking forward to using the canoe in the lake. On the walk down to the lake there’s a really cool path except for one thing. TICKS. We’re used to having to pull ticks off of our dog after hiking, usually just one or two. Not here though, when we got to the bottom of the path there were no less than 20 ticks on my dog. I had to pull them all off not to mention a few on me, and then carry my dog back up the hill which sucked. The thing is, someone else mentioned this in the reviews and I really wish I heeded their advice. I don’t think it’s fair to ding the property because we encountered the same exact problem when we hiked Malakoff Diggins, it’s really just a grass valley thing, but please if you love your dog do not hike down to the lake. Ok now that that’s out of the way, the rest of the stay was so wonderful. When we couldn’t find the cushions for the outdoor furniture we messaged Tod who resolved the problem quickly and was very communicative. Even though it got down to 39 outside at night it was very comfortable inside. During the day being able to open all the doors was really cool. Oh one more thing that is in no way the fault of the property but there are some annoying wakeboarders who blast really loud basically strip club music during the day on Saturday. Not exactly super peaceful, but overall loved our stay!

Secluded and great view
We spent Christmas Eve and Day here and really enjoyed the solitude. Nice home with a great deck and view of Rollins Lake. I would suggest a binder for guests with possible hikes in the area, helpful hints for using the home, and if guests bring dogs, a note about ticks and poison oak in the area. Overall, we enjoyed our stay.

The house and deck are great for relaxing but maintenance is a bit lacking. We really enjoyed hanging out on the deck and going green withe solar etc. But, lights under the counter in the kitchen didn't work, the TV had connection issues, water damage in the bath sink area etc

All was great except the helicopters that started flying 100 yards away at 6:30am the first day, then eveyday we were there. They stopped flying the day we left. PG&E was removing equipment. Not a normal activity, but very unfortunate timing for a trip needing peace and quiet.

Lovely location, secluded but close to Nevada City/Grass Valley sites. Amazing decks and space. Private path down to the lake was a little tricky to descend but well worth it. Loved to paddle board and kayak. Would come back!

At one with nature
This is an amazing place, location, location, location!!! You feel like you are in the tops of the trees over looking the forest and lake. It is completely green energy so you feel at peace with nature and can enjoy the little sounds. The Nana panoramic window/door walls make the space feel so much bigger than the actual square footage. So many more things to rave about, but you just habe to experience for yourself. We could not have asked for a better weekend!!!

Enjoyed our stay. Trees and view were beautiful. Rain was a bit unexpected when we booked and it hampered some of what we had wanted to do outside. Was hoping for more hiking in the area. The house was well stocked and allowed us to escape which is what we wanted.

this was fantastic and I will be doing it again. perfect sense of isolation to focus on some seminar work I needed to do as well as jazz compositions and study- everything comfortable and perfect for my duration of stay. Went to Grass valley on a very easy trip for dinner - so the feeling of isolation was there, but could go to a store in 10 min if needed. I will return again. I would say there were a couple of things that took away from the experience - the skiploader that was parked with some equipment as I arrived made the outside assthetic not so great and couldn't find cushions for the deck chairs - but everything was good to go and served a great purpose.

Great two weeks…
The solitude of the home was exactly what we needed! We spent many hours sitting on the deck enjoying the lake views, listening to the turkeys and owls and making friends with a beautiful red fox. And when the weather doesn’t permit the views from inside the home are just as amazing. Tom was very responsive to any inquiry we had. Thank you for such a peaceful stay!

Not what we expected
Overall, the place is secluded and quiet. It is up in the trees and has floor to ceiling windows that gives the feel of being in a tree house. The lake is nice, but there isn't a beach to lounge on. We had four major issues with the property. 1) When I first arrived, the floors were noted to be dirty with obvious shoe marks. 2) We wanted to use the oven, but we were strongly urged not to due to insufficient power to run the oven. Instead, we used the toaster oven, which wasn't quite the same. 3) The power went out overnight, so we had to run the gasoline generator out front to keep the electricity going. It was a constant source of stress having to worry about the power going out. 4) One of the glass doors in the living room jams when trying to lock it. So, we left it unlocked at night, which left us feeling a little bit on edge. Hopefully these issues will get addressed!

Nice, quiet place to relax
Only downside that had nothing to do with the property itself was that when we got home our dogs had ticks. We pulled close to 2 doz so we probably won't visit that area again. The place though was quite beautiful and very comfortable.

I'm sorry for not mentioning to not let the dogs run free, early winter is deer tick season all over the Sierra Nevada mountains and this year has been especially bad.

A fantastic retreat.
The Lotus House was the perfect combination of tucked away from everything and still close to town with stores and restaurants. It is a gorgeous house! Every room has a view of the lake. The all-glass walls were amazing. Being able to open them completely to access the well-appointed deck truly brought the indoors out. The hardest decision was where to have coffee in the morning - in bed watching the lake, on the deck watching the lake, or in the living room watching the family of deer that visited every day. We stayed in the fall to coincide with a family event. I cannot wait to visit again in the spring or summer to take full advantage of the patio and lake access.

My boyfriend and I are both in the hospitality industry and live in beautiful Napa. After three solid days of events I told him we need a change of scenery and some peace and quiet. Modern Retreat
Tucked away in the foothills on the edge of Rollins Lake, the Lotus Lake House was the perfect place to enjoy and work during emergency repair work at our nearby home. Note that while the listing suggests there is Internet at the property, there is no WiFi at the house. But, cellular coverage in the area for the major providers (Verizon, T-mob in my case) is good (4G) allowing one to use a hotspot to get online for work, school, video/entertainment, or general browsing. We booked last minute and Tod was very easily accessible and communicative throughout. Tod's home is a great example of how one can have modern conveniences and architecture in a green/off-grid way.

Fantastic!!
Where to begin? We had an absolutely fantastic time at the Lotus Lake House. The place is architecturally stunning, set in the most private, forested location with filtered views of the lake. We loved waking up in the morning and completely opening up the Nana walls, drinking our coffee on the deck outside and enjoying the view. In the afternoons, we loved the hike on the trail down to the private beach in a hidden cove to take a dip in the lake and watch the water skiers wakeboarders. Evenings we opened the house back up to cool it down, and made dinners on the gas grill. Everything about our stay was perfect including all our interactions with Tod, who was always quick to respond, helpful and super friendly! The kids, who joined us on the final day of our stay, loved every bit about it as well and asked how soon we could come back. We will for sure! Thank you Tod for sharing your beautiful home!!

Fascinating and unique property
The listing needs a little updating as there is only 1 convertible sofa not 2. The Lotus house is fascinating in its design and the way the windows fold away to give you an indoor/outdoor space on the deck amongst the trees is just genius. We saw so many deer, bats, geese. We heard owls at night and watched the stars appear. The early mornings are beautiful with the light on the lake and so many small birds all around. The owner was easily reachable to answer any questions at all. I would love to leave the review at that but it was noisy. We are probably in peak season so I’m sure other times of the year are quieter but the constant noise of jet skis, motor boats, loud music, shouting was pretty obnoxious. We didn’t feel safe taking out the canoe because of the speeds and numbers of water craft rushing through this narrow section. Noise aside, this is really worth a stay because of the uniqueness of this wonderful property.

Best isolation after a 1.5 years of isolation
First of all, the surroundings are perfect for me, a lot of nature, away from any neighbors, and a relatively good view of the sky. Morning coffee with doe and fawns was nice. All very tranquil and relaxing. Secondly, the house itself is a marvel. During my week long trip there was a heat wave (>100^o F), which prevented me from doing as many outdoor activities as I had planned. By opening the house up in the evening and morning, I never needed to turn on the AC, it kept to about 20 degrees below outside temperature at worst. Another wonderful feature is that, when all closed, it is well isolated, acoustically, from the outside. This allowed my to play guitar at 11, the therapy I needed after quarantine. I had a wonderfully relaxing time -nothing better than opening up all of the Nanadoors on a summer evening. I shall return.

Beautiful and relaxing
We overall loved our stay. It was a gorgeous home and we were well isolated from any neighbors. The only thing keeping this from 5 stars was the upkeep of the path down to the lake (several of the dirt stairs were wobbly and harder to maneuver even tho we are young and healthy. We could do it fine but we thought it might be a concern if we planned to come back with parents) the house wasn’t totally clean. There were some dust bunnies under the bed, and the sheets had several stains that we hoped were just from detergent or bleach tho stained sheets are never something you want to see in a rental. However aside from the things mentioned above the place was in nice shape. We were also surprised that our check in info stated there was no internet even tho the listing has internet stated as being provided. We were able to use data on our phones when internet was needed but I wish they had it since it was on the listing and we did need it occasionally. Overall we would return and probably will come back it was a wonderful trip. Hopefully tho some of the cleanliness issues will be better addressed and I will probably bring my own sheets just in case.

Magical
This place is dreamy. All the joys of camping, but all the conveniences of a home. Beautiful, secluded deck. You can open up one entire corner of the home to create an entirely indoor/outdoor flow. We were so happy here. We were worried about bugs because of the open air, but they were shockingly not a problem indoors or out. Never heard a mosquito! The early mornings and nights were blissfully cooler and more peaceful. Heat of the day could be warm. We followed directions for keeping the house cooler and it worked fairly well, but still not like A/C, which we avoided using (as asked) for the planet’s sake. Daytime could get a bit noisy with partying, loud speedboats and jet ski traffic, but they always just passed by and didn’t linger. Private “lake” (reservoir) access in a beautiful spot for swimming or launching of their great canoe! Caveats: Internet was listed in ad, but the house does not have WiFi. A/C is also listed in ad, and the house does have it, but its use is meant to be very limited to conserve energy and reduce CFC’s. Overall, it is an enchanting place. Just be aware that you will be limiting your energy consumption and indoors is much warmer than typical with A/C. We will leave with cherished memories of perfection of this place and look very forward to returning! Thank you for a magical stay!

Just as you see on the photos. Such a lovely place to escape to. Even with some power issues we had a very enjoyable stay and loved being so close to the lake . The kayak / paddle board was such fun. The Lotus house was a welcome retreat from our day-to-day responsibilities. It is a lovely setting that feels secluded, but is still close to anything you might need. The house was comfortable - we spent most of our time on the deck but we also found the kitchen area a great space to work in and the bed, though not a king like we have at home, was the perfect balance of firm and cushy. The kitchen does not have everything, as someone mentioned, but it has most of what we needed to cook every meal. We wish we had brought a pepper grinder, a proper bread knife, some wine glasses and olive oil. There is a small, half fridge, no freezer, an excellent range top, toaster oven, toaster, and microwave. The hike down the hill to the lake is not as crazy as some have alluded - don't take the short cut at the bottom - stay on the trail and just take the extra time. It is a bit of a hike, but we enjoyed the dip in the lake at the bottom. A mention about air conditioning - it exists, as Tod mentioned, but we did not use it during our stay. It was HOT - 90s every day - but we opened the place up in the late evening and morning, and shut things down in the afternoon. We also either swam or napped during the hottest times of the day. Keeping the screens closed on the skylights but the skylights opened helped vent the hot air, I believe. The lake noise can be pronounced - some evenings we felt like we were at a monster truck rally. Being right on the lake is beautiful and peaceful, and sometimes loud. Just be aware. This is a very special place. We would recommend you check it out.

We had a great time at Lotus Lake house. The house is unique and very well taken care of. Fully stocked with everything you could possibly want or need. Tod, the owner, was very responsive to any questions we had. We would definitely stay there again. Suggestions would be to replace the queen size bed with a king size, as the room is large enough. Also, shades would be an asset in the front of the house to block the sun .

Lakeside Tree House
The wife and I had a wonderful week in the Lotus Lake House. It seamlessly melds the indoor space with expansive outdoor deck areas with retractable floor-to-ceiling sliding glass windows/doors along three walls. Great to have a short walk down to the lake, complete with a kayak and a canoe. Be prepared for the presence of lots of motorboats and jet skis, though. But the feeling of being out on the deck among the trees, both first thing in the morning and under the stars at night was unbeatable. We'll be back.

We have had nice warm days there and could take advantage of sliding doors to open the whole cottage, modern, contemporary area and connect with nature around. The cottage needs some upgrades such a kitchen cabinet doors, wood on the deck here and there. We though the housekeeping has a some space for an improvement. But overall it is a very unique place and we have had absolutely wonderful time in this incredible open space set up above the turquoise lake. Thank you Tod for sharing your property with us. This spot was the perfect weekend getaway. I wanted something secluded (check), I wanted something on a lake (check), and I wanted a nice deck that I could stare up at the stars at night (check). If you need a place to relax, unplug, and unwind, I would highly recommend staying here.

My wife and I had a weekend getaway here, and it was perfect. We've done a lot of VRBO, Airbnb, etc, and have always found that the pictures have always looked better online than the actual property. Not in this case. I feel like this property is downplayed by the online photos (if that's possible). It is perfect. I will, however, note a couple of "FYIs" for future travelers (as I found previous comments helpful to me during our stay); - the trail down to the lake is a bit tricky in some spots, particularly when you hit the canoe. If one of your family members is an "indoor cat" like mine, it will be an issue. But, if you have an outdoor cat in the family, you'll make it work, as we did. Bring sturdy shoes and a positive attitude. - The Blueray/DVD player is a bit finicky- not sure if that was due to the scratched DVDs or the player itself, but it was a little frustrating. -The door locks/keys are a little tricky when you check in and out. But, seriously, that's it. And those aren't really complaints- just FYIs. It is an amazing place, that we're already planning on visiting again.

Beautiful contemporary architectural gem in a private oasis
Stunning place, loved visiting. We were here in late November with cooler temps and some rain and it was a great woodsy retreat, although our deck time was limited. I can only imagine how wonderful it would be in the summer with access to the lake. Ignore all the comments about the heat/warmth, the radiant heat does take some time but warms right up. Thanks!

An exceptional property above the lake in a most peaceful setting.
This is our second stay at the Lotus Lake House and it was absolutely wonderful. It has everything that we could ask for. My small family enjoys the outdoors and the beautiful location surrounded by pines with views of the lake below you is just perfect. We would go on runs each day on the quiet roads and we spent a day on the lake wake boarding in a rental boat. It was so much fun. This place is even better now with the option of renting the tiny house with the main house. This way we could spread out a bit but be right to each other with no one else around. We especially love that we have a small environmental footprint when staying at the Lotus Lake House. This matters a lot to us. We will definitely be back. Thank you for a fabulous vacation.

It’s like being in a perfect tree house
Super open and airy. The outdoors and indoors flow together. We felt like we were in a tree house high up in the forest. We absolutely loved the house! We felt luke-warm about the lake, but we’re total water people so we had hoped to do lots of swimming, fishing, and canoeing. The noise from the power boats was mostly okay because the home is high up on a hill. We loved the walking path down to the lake. House has an awesome and huge deck where we spent most of our time. Lovely views! We lost power a few times, but after the first time the handy man came righhnover to show us how to turn it back on. We’ve stayed in many rental homes, and this is one of our favorites as far as the actual home goes. We have two teenagers and they both loved it too, and the four of us fit easily in the home. Visit Happy Apple Kitchen and farm stand for tasty produce (summer), pies, and an old-fashioned feel. Grass Valley is a great, small town 20-minutes away. Chicago Park store near the home is small, yet has a good selection of groceries, and fishing bait, in case you forget something. We highly recommend this home to couples or families looking for a relaxing and unique place to stay.

Nice house - Buyer beware
The information on the website does not adequately inform the renter about what's involved with operating this house. It is not until you arrive, and get access to the "house book", that the most important information needed to make an informed decision about renting this property is made available to you. In short, what we did not know: 1. access to the internet-a 20 minute drive from the house to Safeway/Starbucks. We emailed the owner about this and his response was that a poll had been taken and it was decided that there would be no internet. We did not know about this poll. It was not listed on the web page. We also had no TV/Satelitte. 2. heating the house and having hot water-a few small solar panels plus a generator were supposed to provide heat/hot water...both woefully inadequate to provide either one. The backup plan in the "house book" was to use layers of clothing and lots of blankets. At midnight, no heat...at 7 am, no heat..., at noon when we left the property...no heat. An informed decision about renting this house cannot be made without the information included in the "house book".

We are always upset when a traveler has a less than 5 star experience but we don’t know what to do when a rare traveler doesn’t call for support from our three-person local team and then feels that leaving false information in a negative review helps the community. 1. The Lotus Lake House is a 5 star romantic getaway. Cell phones and hotspots work great here, so urgent matters can be handled with your phone. Colfax is a small city with all services and is precisely five miles drive on Hwy 174, Grass Valley/Nevada city are larger and 9.6 miles away. Amazing
This Zen-like retreat delivered on its promise. Hidden jem among the trees, very private and on the lake. The house and deck were immaculate. Everything about it was inviting. We hope to be back again with our two dogs.
