Message to Gentle Readers of this review from the Hosts: the Guest's vague statement accusing us - the Hosts - of being "micro managers (sic) about everything" - without bothering to give any specifics. Is that a fair or informative assessment? No, it's neither. The fact is that our "micro-managing" this Guest was only necessary because he apparently did not actually READ the Rental Agreement he signed and agreed-to until after check-in. Thus, he feigned surprise at our rules for non-registered Guests coming to our premises, when these rules are merely the requirements of our Maui County B&B license. (This is fully explained in the Rental Agreement document.) And if the rules were so unreasonable (they're not), then Guest could have cancelled the booking immediately without penalty. We were very flexible and accommodating as the Guest changed his booking several times. And we even went "outside the box" and found a way to charge for his part-time extra Guests only for the nights they were here. Guest would call that micro-managing; we would call it good customer service. The other matter that wouldn't have been a matter at all had Guest simply read the Rental Agreement was regarding air conditioner usage. Rules regarding a/c usage are few and reasonable. One rule is not to set a temp lower than 72F - in keeping with well-known energy saving guidelines. Guests in this party repeated abused the a/c, and so we politely asked that Guest follow the a/c usage rules that Guest had already agreed-to in the Rental Agreement. Guest calls our actions as Hosts "micro managing". We'd call it gentle, polite reminders of the booking details that Guest had agreed-to. Guest is obviously not a good match for the Tranquil Palms way. And although he kindly suggests that he would like to stay here again, we will respectfully suggest - insist, actually - that next time the Guest find other accommodations more-agreeable to his unstructured needs. Dear Reader: Here is a bit of Fact Checking from the Hosts: (1) Readers please know that Tranquil Palms B&B is NOT located “right dab in the middle of the island”. The middle of Maui is the dry, arid, Central Valley; the low area between the two mountainous areas of East Maui and West Maui. We’re actually 25 minutes East of the Central Valley, in the lovely green, lush, and rural Haiku area of the East Maui North Shore. Truly a great location just off Hana Highway, and it’s easy to get anywhere from here. (2) Our home is not “right behind” the Palm Cottage rental unit. It’s actually about 75-ft up the hill and on the back-side of the Cottage. Due to vegetation and the Palm Cottage window awnings, our house is mostly obscured. In fact, we cannot directly see the comings and going of the Palm Cottage Guests. (3) Yes, we sure do live in our home on our lovely Tranquil Palms property. All owners of legally licensed Bed and Breakfasts (“B&Bs”) in Hawaii are required by law to live on the property. Although this Guest considers our presence a “some what down” (sic) aspect of the property, other Guests invariably tell us that having the owners nearby on-property is actually an advantage. They say it’s good to have immediate Host availability and response, security, etc. (4) We are SUPER-dedicated to Guest privacy and we do not walk our dog near Palm Cottage such that Guest privacy would be compromised. Our gentle furry Greeter Ellie is adored by Guests, including this Guest. We walk Ellie on the driveway on the other side of a thick hedge of palm trees well-away and of sight from Palm Cottage. BTW, Ellie never barks because barking would not be in keeping with the Tranquil Palms vibe. 😊 (5) We’re sorry this Guest didn’t enjoy (or perhaps “notice”) her Palm Cottage experience. Guest’s review is a bit “edgy”, and we’re pretty sure it has to do with her resentment of us – the Hosts – residing on the property. We happened to be on the driveway when Guest arrived for her party-of-two check-in with a third Guest. She apparently assumed that at a vacation rental home no one would notice the third unbooked and unpaid Guest. We’re a B&B, we’re here, and we noticed.
