The Hotel de Calais is superbly situated overlooking the harbour. We arrived at about 7.30 on an April evening and most of the parking spaces had been taken, but the receptionist quickly came out and said that we could park in the single garage so that was fine, since having read other reviews I had been a little worried about that. The receptionist was friendly and helpful and spoke English. We were pleasantly surprised to find that we had been given a room overlooking the harbour, which was a definite bonus. The hotel is certainly tired and in need of refurbishment but as a night stop on the way to the tunnel it was fine. Breakfast was as you would expect from a French hotel in this price bracket, although the young man in charge did offer to fry an egg for me, rather than the more usual hard boiled variety which I would usually expect. The only disappointment was that it was so misty the next morning that we couldn’t even see the harbour from our window, but I can’t blame the hotel for that!
