Cernusco is also known for the elegance of its historic buildings and villas. In addition to the aforementioned Villa Biancani Greppi, home to the Town Hall and a place to rediscover the most important moments in Cernusco's long history, Villa Alari Visconti deserves special mention. Commissioned from architect Giovanni Ruggeri by Giacinto Alari in the 18th century, this splendid Rococo-style villa, with its system of English-style avenues and gardens, quickly became famous in the Milan area, so much so that it was requested to be rented by Archduke Ferdinand of Habsburg, son of Empress Maria Theresa. It was his summer residence, along with his wife Maria Beatrice d'Este. The last family to own it were the Visconti Saliceto family, and since 2007 it has been municipal property. Also worthy of note is Villa Uboldo—home to the hospital—which, with its lush English-style garden, now a public park, evokes a charmingly romantic atmosphere.
Bike path along the Naviglio Martesana (accessible to all types of bicycles)
The Martesana bike path is one of the paths that allows you to explore the history of Lombardy's canals, combining sport and tourism. It runs alongside the Naviglio Piccolo, a navigable canal that connects Milan to the Adda River, and therefore to Lake Como.
Construction began in 1475 at the behest of Francesco Sforza and was completed in 1496. Leonardo da Vinci, with his innovations in hydraulic engineering, also contributed to the design of the new Naviglio.
The canal now serves as an irrigation system, but for centuries, its waters were traversed by barges carrying people, animals, and goods of all kinds between Lecco and Milan in a day: times that were unthinkable for land transport.
Being a pedestrian-cycle path, it is very popular on weekends, not only with cyclists but also with families with children out for a walk.
The Martesana cycle path begins at Cassina de' Pomm on the corner of Via Melchiorre Gioia in Milan and extends for 30 km, passing through the municipalities of Cologno Monzese, Vimodrone, Cernusco sul Naviglio, Cassina dei Pecchi, Bussero, Gorgonzola, Gessate, Inzago, and Cassano d'Adda.
The Martesana bike path runs along the right bank of the canal, passing through towns and parks equipped with benches and tables under the shade of the trees. You can enjoy a picnic in the park and stock up on food and water. There's also a diverse selection of trattorias and DeCA-certified restaurants in Gorgonzola and Cassano d'Adda.
Since the 17th century, many patrician residences have sprung up on the left bank, villas of delight, where noble families spent their summers seeking a bit of coolness away from the sultry Milanese summers.
Casa Matabù is located 500 meters from the historic center of Cernusco sul Naviglio, a pedestrian area filled with shops of all kinds, bars, and restaurants. It's also 1 km from the MM2 green metro station, which takes you to central Milan in 20 minutes. Free street parking is available below the apartment. A supermarket and a roundabout leading to one of the area's most interesting shopping centers, Carosello, are just a few minutes away.
