Mdina,pronounced em-dee-nah, is a small walled city in Malta that dates back to Phoenician times. Thats 3000 years of heritage! Mdina means fortified place in Arabic. The Romans fortified the city as the population grew and suburbs began cropping up around it.

It was the Capitol up until the 1500's when the Knights of Malta chose Birgu/Vittorosia as the new capital. in the Great Siege of 1565 The Turkish army passed by Mdina and could have easily taken it as it was poorly defended. Story goes a local nun had this vision that called for a great procession praising god, and so every person in the town dressed up and paraded around the top of the walls. To the Turks this looked like Mdina was teeming with defenders, and so they left it alone and marched on Vittorosia and the rest of Malta.

It gets better though!

The Turks left their base camps fairly empty as they marched out, so a band of Mdina attacked and torched them. The Turks thought they were being significantly attacked from rear and retreated giving time for reinforcements to arrive and eventually drive them out. Awesome ! Take that you crazy Turks!

No offense if your Turkish because from you we get great roasted coffee, turkish delights, um.... bath houses, oh, and Atlantic Records' founder, Ahmet Ertegün and kebabs .... Stuff like that.

The view from Mdina wall is best described as "Commanding" as you can see the entire island from there. It's a small city extremely clean and stark with narrow maze like alleys . But don't worry, impossible to get lost for more than 30 seconds. It is referred to as "The Silent City" and it was pretty darn quite when I visited. Really ... quite. Worth it to go early before the busses of tourists arrive.

「The apartment was fully equipped with everything required. It was very clean and comfortable. Air conditioning in the bedroom and living/dining areas. The television has Netflix, YouTube etc, lots of entertainment to watch. The apartment is very well situated and is close to the bus stops. The rooftop sun trap with an added bonus of of hot tubs. An excellent place to stay for a holiday and would definitely recommend Horizon Suites.」

「The interior of the property was not as new as the photos indicated. Some of the furniture was a bit old fashioned and obviously second hand. But the location was fabulous. Parking was easy and everything in the flat worked well. The beds were comfortable, spare pillows were comfy. Plenty of hot water, airconditioning in the bedrooms was excellent. Kitchen was adequate but didnt really use it cos went out all the time or had easy food. I would definitely stay there again」

"newly renovated...clean n tidy...location is good but if u r driving....its almost impossible to find a parking space nearby in the evening. room is spacious but there r no refrigerator...no electric kettle...no table..no chair ....shower area no curtains if this room is for elderly or handicapped they should make a remark in the website."
