Beautiful views

Lovely, clean, quiet unit with gorgeous views of the SFbay from the Berkeley side. We had a wonderful stay. Walking distance to many places on Shattuck.

This place smells bad, of bug spray or mildew. I did not enjoy it. The hot tub area is attractive but faces the street and does not feel private. There were just a host of small things that weren’t quite right, like hair and ants in the bath tub, other small things. I have stayed at other homes that were truly homes, but this one feels run down and used just for hire, like a boarding house rental. While it has a bit of charm here and there, I really did not enjoy the stay. Sorry to say! It is a great location in the Berkeley Hills, but I would recommend against staying here; please keep looking for something that truly has a Zen soul, not just a few Buddha statues.

Review

Quiet spot tucked into the Berkeley Hills. Within 6 blocks of shattuck shopping but keep in mind it’s also 225 ft above shattuck—those last 2 blocks are killers carrying groceries but thankfully Uber’s are cheap. If you have a car, it has the best setup for parking of ANY place I’ve stayed in Berkeley...your own private spot! None of this on street parking permit stuff driving around for 15 minutes looking for a spot or sharing a driveway with 6 other cars! Great bed and sofa with kitchen capable of handling breakfast and lunch with no problems.

The Zen Den delivers a zen experience

The property listing was accurate and perfect for our mini vacation. Bring your own knife or a sharpener, the knives in the kitchen are very dull. You may also want to bring extra towels. We had two bathroom towels and one beach towel. Not enough for 2 people to shower and enjoy the hot tub. I also had a hard time getting a response to my emails. You have to call the cleaning lady when the unit is vacated and because I was driving and late for an appointment, I didn't actually get to call her for about a half hour after we left; she basically yelled at me that check out was at 11. I tried to explain to her our situation and that the cleaning crew never showed up while we were there but I didn't get the impression she spoke very good English. Overall I would give The Zen Den 4 out of 5 stars.

A Wish Fulfilled

I've secretly wished to live up in Berkeley Hills. This was my gift to me and hubby. And we've had a comfortable stay. We walked everywhere, everyday. Felt safe in the neighborhood even at night. Enjoyed the view esp. at night when all the lights were lit. We esp. appreciated the quiet. The only thing to mention: shower faucet needs fixing. Thank you.

Great space!

This was a super cute place with a charming deck to hang out on. There are great views of the city because the place is built up on a hill. We had four people in our party. I would recommend not having any more than three people, which I think that’s what it called for anyway. The place is efficient, cozy and has everything you may need, and fits three comfortably.

Very Zen Indeed

The Zen Den is lovely! Great location with dedicated parking. Centrally located to downtown Berkeley and major freeways. Also a very easy jaunt to N. California wine country. You’ll want to bring your swimsuit along to take advantage of the hot tub. The deck is a gem for reading, relaxing and meditating. Small place but suited our needs very well, and was even slightly more spacious than expected. Very clean and well-appointed. Hot tub and grill were ready to go, and we used them quite a bit. Views from the deck are lovely and made for a perfect retreat from the grind. Tracy was responsive and helpful. Would definitely stay again! Tracy is extremely responsive and a great resource for any questions your may have. We appreciate the thoughtful touches like coffee, wine and the book selection.

Cozy studio in the North Berkeley Hills

This space is cozy, warm and welcoming. It was the perfect size for my wife and I whom were passing through the area for a couple days. It's located close to many good restaurants, including Chez Panisse. We enjoyed the morning stroll to Pete's Coffee shop. The space is very comfortable. We enjoyed the adorable kitchette area. If we had more time, we would have enjoyed the yard and hot tub. But we were too busy every day with activities. Tracy answered questions quickly. If we are passing through this area area again then we will be booking the Zen Den. Thanks Tracy.

Charming space in a great neighborhood

We came to Berkeley to visit my daughter who attends the UCB. She suggest the North Berkeley Hills as a great place to stay. We wanted a unit that was close enough to walk to the UC but still quiet. We found the perfect space with the Zen Den. It was a pretty walk past the Rose Gardens to get to the campus. And the neighborhood is quiet and safe. The views were lovely from the living room/bedroom and yard. There is a large bathroom with a bathtub. But the hot tub and yard were the highlights. It was so nice to have a private yard to sit in and read a book. There is a comfortable outdoor couch and dining table in the yard. Lots of space to spread out. We liked the Zen decor and found Tracy to be a great host. If you are looking for a place that is close to the campus, shops, restaurants in a nice, quiet neighborhood then you have found it!

A lovely quiet neighborhood with off street parking. Beautiful outdoor space with wonderful views. Walkable to BART and Berkley restaurants. Workable kitchen with enough plates and cooking equipment. The hot tub was hot and clean. Enjoyed drinking wine on the deck in the evenings and watching the sun set over the bay.

We had such a peaceful and relaxing stay in the Zen Den. The space was clean, sunny and very inviting. The views of the bay were lovely. The bed is very comfortable and the bathroom is large and even has a bathtub. The outdoor space is the best. We watched deer from the deck. We enjoyed the hot tub very much. It was the perfect space for us to spend our time in Berkeley. I highly recommend this space to other guests.

Cute and cozy and Boy what a View!

The Zen Den was the perfect spot for my husband and I and our terrier “son”. We stayed 4 nights and the views from both the living room and that amazing deck were fabulous. We enjoyed sitting on the deck each night having a glass of wine, watching the sunset. The place is very clean, spacious bathroom but a pretty limited kitchen (which was just fine with us, tons of fabulous restaurants close by). Oh, and the comment about deer? We saw some every day. Just meandering down the residential streets. Very cool. Loved it - we’ll be back!

Adorable Studio with Amazing Yard!

We had a great stay in the Zen Den! It is such a fun space! The large windows in the bedroom/living room area let in so much natural sunlight! The bathroom is large (even has a bathtub) and the kitchenette has everything needed to cook meals (although there are so many good restaurants nearby that we ended up eating out a lot). But the highlight is the yard! 2-tier deck with a hot tub, outdoor sofa set, dining set, bbq AND AMAZING BAY VIEWS! We spent most of our time out here! It's located in a great neighborhood. So many parks within walking distance. We also walked to the gourmet ghetto and Solano as well. It really was the perfect location. It's a really quiet street but close to so many things. This is a great spot and I look forward to staying here again! :) Cannot beat the price! So much cheaper than a hotel room with so much more to offer!

You won't be disappointed with this lovely space!

My family booked both this lovely studio as well as the connecting house for a family birthday party. We loved everything about this place. It's a great space. Very clean and bright with so many amenities. The highlight for us was really the large yard. It's so hard to find studio units in this area that have their own private yards. Not to mention large deck with outdoor living and dining furniture and a hot tub! Wow! The bay views were another highlight. The outdoor decks and indoor space both had stunning bay views. We enjoyed laying in bed at night watching the city lights dance in the sky. There is ample parking, which is another huge benefit for this area. And the furniture is all new and very comfortable. The large bathroom with bathtub was great, too. It's a great space and I will be staying here again in the future! Better than the pictures show!

WONDERFUL space in a beautiful area of town!

This was such an amazing place to stay! Own private entrance and private bathroom AND a small kitchen to cook in really makes it feel like your own little apartment. We would usually cook breakfasts to save some money, head out for a bit, come back and make lunch, then out again For more activities and finally ending with visiting a local place for dinner. Bed was super comfortable; I'm thinking it was a memory foam one and plenty of extra blankets if you need them. We never got a chance to use the hot tub but perhaps on another trip as I love a good soak and it's great that it's private just for the studio you're staying in. For the price and the location it is well worth booking and definitely a place we would come back to. If you're on the fence about it, you don't need to be. It's a great choice!

Lovely location and space. We had a week of concerts to attend at the Greek theater and were looking for a place to stay that was close to the theater as well as other areas to enjoy and explore. Wow. We loved the hike up to Tilden park and the lake within it. We found many of the pathways that lead up and down the Berkely Hills. Although strenuous on the way up, we were delighted to see parts of the hills we had ever seen. In addition, the Greek theater is within walking distance (20 min) which beats waiting for an Uber home on a busy concert night. The space is beautiful, just as pictured. Clear instructions for checking in and out, as well as parking. A bonus was the provided coffee, tea and bottle of wine! Such nice extra touches go a long way. I would definately recommend this space, and would return here again! We had a lovely time.

Quiet Spot in the Berkeley Hills

Stay here for a few nights while in Berkeley. This place is located in a quiet neighborhood in the Berkeley Hills. The UC Berkeley campus is about a 20 minute walk. Downtown/BART are about a 30 minute walk. There is a grocery store and some restaurants about 15 minutes walking. The rental was nice and had a private deck with an awesome view. There is a spot to park in the driveway and also plenty of street parking. Tracy, the owner, was nice and responded quickly to my emails. I would stay here again when I'm in Berkeley

Quiet retreat in a beautiful part of the city!

The Zen Den truly identifies with its name. It’s a quiet retreat with a beautiful view of the bay and city. Shops and restaurants are nearby. What a hidden gem! Located close to many parks. The best part? Your own deck with amazing bay views. Tracy was a great host. It’s a wonderful spot I really recommend.
