Oresund Bridge

Travel from Sweden to Denmark across this award-winning bridge and tunnel, the largest road and rail bridge in Europe.

The Oresund Bridge opened in 2000 to provide a non-stop travel link across the Oresund Strait. It is the largest combined road and rail bridge in Europe. Visit this award-winning bridge and tunnel to admire its architecture and to travel between Sweden and Denmark in less than 30 minutes.

The main section of the bridge runs for almost five miles (eight kilometers), from Sweden’s west coast to the manmade island of Peberholm. Note the four-lane highway that travels above a double track railway. Look for the four 669-foot (204-meter) pylons supporting the bridge’s main span, one of its most photographed features.

When the bridge reaches Peberholm, it travels for about 2.5 miles (four kilometers) over the island and then turns into a one-level tunnel of approximately the same length. This tunnel connects with Amager, on the east coast of Denmark. Traveling from Sweden, it gives the impression of a bridge disappearing into the water with no return. Although not open to tourists, Peberholm is home to the avocet and 300 other seabird and plant species.

Several restaurants look out over the bridge from along Sweden’s coast. Travel about 6.2 miles (10 kilometers) from Malmo’s city center to reach a small parking lot and jetty that provide uninterrupted photo opportunities. You can also get good views from Ribersborg Beach, a short walk east of the city center.

The bridge is a 15-minute drive from the center of Malmo. Car tolls can be costly, but it’s affordable to cross the bridge by train. It is a 40-minute journey from Malmo’s Central Station to Copenhagen’s Hovedbanegard station. Visit the official Oresundsbron website for toll prices.

The Oresund Bridge is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Carry your passport on any bridge crossing. Passport checks are rare, although they can occur at the toll booths when entering Sweden. Passport checks in Denmark are less common.
