Stroll through Pannett Park for unbeatable views of the town of Whitby and its famous, cinematic abbey. Stay here for longer, however, to discover the numerous delights of the park, including a fossil garden, an art gallery and the town’s main museum. The park offers numerous scenic spots, where you can relax in between visiting its impressive attractions.

Pannett Park is named after its founder, Robert Elliott Pannett, who bought the land in 1902. Experience the legacy of Pannett’s life by wandering through elegant gardens and by viewing his art collection, which is housed in the park’s art gallery.

Amble through the different gardens that make up the park. The Jurassic Garden features a footpath lined with fossil designs and the replica of a prehistoric crocodile that was found nearby. The South Seas Garden reflects Maori culture, while the Commemorative Garden features reflective sculptures designed to remember war veterans. Look for the Floral Clock, which was installed to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation.

Browse the exhibits in Whitby Museum, which is in the center of the park. The museum contains artifacts detailing the history of the area. See fossils, whaling ships and toy collections, each chronicling different aspects of Whitby’s colorful history.

Next to the museum is the Pannett Art Gallery, which hosts a permanent exhibition of impressionist paintings and works by local artists. Discover the work of George Weatherill in the rooms named after him, where you can see his atmospheric seascape paintings. Admission to the gallery is free.

The park also features a large and lively play area for children. Relax while youngsters clamber across maritime-themed climbing frames and soar on swings in the well-equipped and safe space.

Pannett Park hosts events throughout the year. Visit over Easter weekend for family fun or come at Halloween for spooky events after dark. Enjoy the many attractions of Pannett Park at any time of year and for free. The park is a 10-minute walk uphill from Whitby train station.
