Ideal stop off close to M6 for a night in the lake district. Dog friendly, family room and good breakfast in the morning. Lovely little woodland walk around the hotel. It's in the middle of nowhere and quite old fashioned but we liked that!

Friendly staff on arrival & during the stay only stayed one night. Bedroom was clean & well maintained with everything you could need . Breakfast was great again a good selection of good quality food. Would defiantly stay again & recommend

I loved this old hotel for is quirky charm and character. Wasn't so keen on the six spiders living in the corners of our bedroom! There was no phone in the room, as advertised in the welcome page, so we had to go down to ask for things but the staff were so friendly and helpful. Would def stay again. Lovely and quiet and very spacious room with a great view. Would def benefit from a fan as it was roasting in our room. Breakfast was lovely and the whole stay was very good value for money.

A grand hotel in the countryside, it's a shame the state it's in now. The carpet is worn out in place's, the game's room is a complete mess and the hotel smells damp & musty. The dining room is grand and well maintained, the food is pretty good. The staff are friendly and helpful.

Reasonable rate for a short stay. Room was clean and well maintained but unbearably warm even whilst leaving a window open. This was just after a warm spell although it was cool outside at the time of our visit. Double bed was a little small if used to a king size and a little soft/uncomfortable. Breakfast was ok and restocked regularly. Grounds are nice with red squirrels in the adjacent woodland. One of the driveways (from the Orton side) was very poorly maintained with a lot of deep potholes so we didn't risk that in the dark. Staff all friendly and helpful.

Lovely old hotel out in the middle of nowhere. Ensure you follow hotel directions to get there, google sends you down an unkept road. We were not housed in the main hotel but in a separate building. There was no lift and we were on the second floor. Our party was all over 60, with one over 73, which wasn’t easy for carrying suitcases and we were not offered any assistance . The wifi was also poor in that building. On a positive note the food was excellent both dinner and breakfast were great, the only issue was we were unable to book in for dinner until 7.45 due to two coaches that were booked in prior.

What a brilliant hotel! It was such a surprising place - we had walked over from Patterdale to Shap so needed a lift to the hotel. It is 4 miles outside the village along a busy road. The hotel is run by such kind, helpful staff who took great care of us. Our room was great, spacious, clean and warm. Food is good, breakfast generous. Good atmosphere with plenty of friendly guests. Highly recommend.
